Senior/Principal Electrical Power Systems Engineer - Critical Power /
Data Centers Location:
Trussville, AL preferred; remote candidates considered with 30%-50% travel

Available Sirius Staffing is seeking a Senior/Principal Electrical Power Systems Engineer for a permanent, direct-hire opportunity focused on advanced electrical power architecture for data center and mission-critical applications. This is a senior-level electrical power engineering and systems-design role responsible for developing complete AC/DC power-system solutions, performing complex power-system analysis, selecting major electrical equipment, and supporting testing and commissioning. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in medium- and low-voltage power distribution, power-system studies, protection, equipment sizing, and electrical system architecture. Direct data center experience is highly valuable, but candidates with strong backgrounds in BESS, microgrids, utility power, power conversion, generation, renewable energy, marine power, or other mission-critical electrical systems will also be considered. Responsibilities Lead the design and development of complete electrical power-system architectures for mission-critical and data center applications. Translate customer and application requirements into technically sound, reliable, and constructible electrical solutions. Perform electrical load calculations, system modeling, equipment sizing, and power-system analysis.
Perform or review studies including:
Load flow Short circuit Arc flash Protection coordination Grounding Harmonics Motor starting Transient and dynamic system behavior, as applicable Select and specify major electrical equipment including: Transformers Medium- and low-voltage switchgear Circuit protection Relays Inverters and power-conversion equipment Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) UPS systems Generators Cabling and distribution equipment Develop and review one-line diagrams, electrical layouts, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation. Evaluate fault current, system efficiency, thermal loading, equipment capability, power quality, and overall system performance. Support the integration of AC and DC power systems, inverter-based resources, energy storage, and distributed generation. Collaborate closely with Controls, Mechanical, Product, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure successful system integration. Participate in design reviews and provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers, consultants, and project teams. Support prototype development, factory testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigations. Provide technical recommendations based on study results, equipment limitations, operating requirements, and applicable codes and standards. Support customers during system planning, design reviews, equipment selection, and commissioning activities. Evaluate emerging technologies related to critical power, energy storage, power conversion, microgrids, and next-generation data center infrastructure. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. 8+ years of electrical power systems design experience. Strong knowledge of AC and DC electrical power systems. Experience designing medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems. Hands-on experience with
ETAP, SKM
PowerTools, EasyPower, or equivalent power-system analysis software. Experience performing or reviewing load-flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, and protection-coordination studies. Strong understanding of protective relaying, electrical distribution, grounding, fault current, and equipment coordination. Experience with electrical load calculations and major equipment sizing and selection. Ability to develop and interpret one-line diagrams, electrical schematics, specifications, and engineering calculations. Ability to independently evaluate model inputs, identify faulty assumptions, interpret complex study results, and make technically defensible engineering decisions. Strong technical problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to travel approximately 30%-50%. Preferred Experience Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: Data centers or mission-critical power systems Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Grid-forming or grid-following converters UPS and static power-conversion systems High-power inverter systems Microgrids and islanded power systems Generator and hybrid power systems Utility generation or distribution Renewable-energy integration Industrial or marine electrical power systems Inverter-dominated or weak-grid systems Power quality and control interactions Protection philosophies and switching strategies FAT, SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis Technical leadership or review of engineering work performed by others Codes & Standards Working knowledge of applicable standards and requirements may include:
NEC / NFPA 70 NFPA 70E IEEE
standards UL standards Utility interconnection requirements Applicable industrial, marine, and mission-critical power standards Work Arrangement The preferred location for this position is Trussville, Alabama, and relocation assistance is available. Qualified remote candidates will also be considered and should be comfortable traveling approximately 30%-50% based on project and customer needs. This position is focused on electrical power-system engineering and design rather than IT infrastructure, server/network operations, or data center technician functions.
