JOB SUMMARY

The job of high school English Language Arts teacher is done for the purpose of developing students' academic and interpersonal skills through academic courses of study and implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. Instructs and supervises a diverse group of students by establishing a positive, respectful learning environment, providing ample and varied learning opportunities and promoting high standards of performance for all students regardless of their background and developmental levels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Model and teach respect with an awareness of diversity. Effectively work with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds. Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment. Assesses students for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students' progress, expectations, goals, etc. Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum. Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum. Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments and/or skills (e.g. lab experiments, athletic techniques, etc.) for the purpose of providing the students with the necessary skills to perform the tasks safely and/or accurately. Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students. Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study. Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment. Maintain regular attendance at work and work activities, and is punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and following schedule. Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, IEP meetings, PLC meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting credential requirements.

Observe laws, district policies and procedures, and professional standards for this position. Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse student, parent and community populations Carry out work responsibilities with strong organizational skills, effectively under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions, and new or emergency conditions. Respect confidential information and the privacy of students, staff and parents. Collect, record, store, retrieve, assimilate, organize and utilize information and records electronically and by using traditional methods. Develop job skills necessary to meet changes in the position. Maintain personal appearance and hygiene appropriate to the position as defined by the district. Meet applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Oregon teacher's license with an English Language Arts endorsement and an ESOL endorsement (preferred). Understanding of human growth and development patterns, learning theory and brain research. Content knowledge in English Language Arts. Familiarity with a variety of age appropriate instructional, assessment and classroom management strategies that reflect current research on best practices. Familiarity with state standards and curriculum frameworks for high school levels. Knowledge and experience with differentiated instruction. Prior experience teaching high school preferred. Experience working with English Language Learners prefered. Effective oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of state and federal education laws and of student and staff rights. Ability to exhibit professionalism and effective human relations. Ability to effectively manage and supervise students and their work. Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred. Abilities Required:

Skills to motivate students, communicate with people from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support staff, and evaluate performance. Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code, appropriate instructional subjects. Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, do a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision. SALARY:

The salary range listed below is for the 2025/26 school year, for a 192-day contract. The salary schedule for the 2026/27 school year is being negotiated this spring.
