Job Description

Position:
Staff Accountant Organizational Relationship:
Reports to the
Controller Position Status:
Full-time, Non-Exempt Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant prepares and performs routine accounting functions for various funds and assists with the budgeting and annual audit process.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Account reconciliations and related journal entries - multiple bank accounts, trust / investment / endowment accounts, prepaid expenses, and other balance sheet accounts as assigned. Other monthly spreadsheet updates / maintenance, including employee benefits, student financial aid (Direct Loans) disbursement activity, etc. Cash receipts / deposits / management: Record donations / deposits from the Cash Receipts Journal ("CRJ") provided by Advancement. Post miscellaneous banking transactions (ACH credits, debits, bank fees, etc.) based on bank account activity. Post miscellaneous cash receipts. Review daily bank transactions for incoming student wires / returned payments and miscellaneous donations not otherwise reported to us via CRJ. Download ACI deposit reports.
Student accounts:
Post financial aid disbursements (deposits and bank transfers) and chargebacks (deposits / payments) Notify Student Accounts of incoming student wires and returned payments Serve as a backup to Student Accounts as needed (i.e. disbursement posting) Other responsibilities: Pick up small cash deposits at the Hope Counseling Center Prepare the cash bank deposit Follow up on outstanding checks Assist with the annual audit as needed.

Education / experience:
At least two years of related work experience. Education - including a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business with an emphasis in accounting - may substitute for some work experience.
Knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. High attention to detail, as bank and other account reconciliations are a key component of this position and requires research / follow-through to resolve discrepancies. Must have knowledge of standard office procedures and equipment. Excellent telephone and interpersonal communication skills are necessary as well as the ability to maintain confidential information.
Mental demands:
Ability to function consistently in multi-task mode. Problem-solving and prioritization skills. Self-directed, detail-oriented, and ability to adapt to changes.
Physical demands:
Extended intervals at a computer keyboard. Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds. May require climbing stairs and walking to various offices on campus.
Character:
Must embody Christian character and be willing to sign a Statement of Faith.
Internal and external relationships:
Internal:
Controller, Vice-President for Business and Finance, Senior Accountant, and other colleagues in the Business Department. Staff, faculty, and students.
External:
Community partnerships, vendors, prospective students and their families. Ideal Candidate:
Up to three years of accounting or related experience (or equivalent hands-on experience) Strong customer service mindset; professional, detail-oriented, and able to multitask Comfortable working with confidential information and learning new systems In-person role. Must live within commuting distance of the University (no out-of-state applicants).
Work Authorization:
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Hope International University does not sponsor employment visas for this position.
