Department Finance Opening Date 03/25/2026 Closing Date 4/15/2026 11:59 PM Eastern Description Benefits Description The City is seeking a detail-oriented, motivated Senior Accountant to join our Finance team. This role plays a vital part in supporting the City's governmental and enterprise accounting functions. Under the general supervision of the General Ledger Accounting Manager, the Senior Accountant performs advanced accounting duties including general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, capital asset and lease accounting, and grant and debt service support. The position also assists with financial reporting, analysis, and the preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) . Examples of Duties Prepare and record journal entries, accruals, corrections, grant-related entries, and reclassifications. Perform complex account and bank reconciliations; investigate discrepancies and ensure timely resolution. Review and analyze general ledger activity for accuracy and compliance with GAAP and GASB standards. Assist with reviewing and reconciling various revenue sources including property taxes, charges for services, licenses/permits, recreation revenues, and utility billing receipts. Manage capital asset and lease/SBITA accounting, including additions, disposals, depreciation, amortization, and related reconciliations. Interpret accounting policies, regulations, and guidelines; provide department-level guidance on proper accounting treatment. Prepare routine financial reports and schedules such as budget-to-actuals, detail ledgers, balance sheets, aging reports, and other departmental reporting. Support the preparation of audit schedules, statistical tables, and documentation for the annual audit and ACFR. Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and transparency in City financial operations. Deliver excellent customer service to internal departments, external partners, vendors, and members of the public. Perform additional related duties as assigned.Typical Qualifications Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of relevant accounting experience. Concentration or experience in governmental accounting is preferred. Local government experience is strongly preferred. Licenses and/orCertifications:
Training through Virginia Government Finance Officers Association may be required.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Strong understanding of GAAP and governmental accounting practices. Proficiency in auditing and accounting principles, with knowledge of municipal operations and automated financial systems. Experience with accounts receivable, accounts payable, disbursement processing, and billing. Knowledge of capital asset management, leases/SBITA accounting, grants, and debt service management. Strong analytical skills, including fluctuation analysis, with the ability to work independently. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively interact with upper management. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, large data analysis). Ability to learn, interpret, and apply complex accounting standards and budgeting practices.Supplemental Information Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a clean, indoor, climate-controlled office environment designed to promote comfort and productivity. Occasional attendance at meetings, training courses, board sessions, or conferences outside of normal business hours may be required based on operational needs.Essential Physical Activities:
