We are looking for an experienced CPA Tax Director to lead and grow a public accounting tax practice. The Tax Director will oversee delivery of tax compliance, planning and consulting services for a diverse client base including individuals and corporations. This role combines technical tax expertise with leadership of staff, client relationship management, and process improvement. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing multiple client engagements in a fast-paced environment and is proficient with UltraTax & Practice CS, QuickBooks and Trial Balance software.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and manage the tax practice: supervise, mentor and develop tax managers and senior staff, set priorities and allocate resources across engagements.
Oversee tax compliance and preparation for individual, corporate (C-Corp, S-Corp), partnership and fiduciary clients, ensuring accuracy and timely filing of multi-state returns.
Perform and supervise complex tax research and planning, deliver strategic tax advice to clients, and identify opportunities for tax savings and risk mitigation.
Review and approve tax returns and supporting workpapers prepared in UltraTax, Practice CS and Trial Balance; ensure adherence to firm quality standards and professional ethics.
Manage multiple client projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, maintaining deadlines, budgets and client expectations.
Coordinate with accounting, audit and advisory teams to deliver integrated client service and support client growth initiatives.
Implement and optimize tax technology and workflows (UltraTax & Practice CS, QuickBooks, Trial Balance), drive efficiency and training for staff on software and processes.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state and local tax laws and regulatory changes; communicate impacts and action plans to clients and internal teams.
Support business development and client retention efforts: participate in proposals, client meetings, and presentations; cultivate strong client relationships.
Monitor engagement profitability, staffing utilization and billing; provide input on pricing, staffing plans and process improvements.
Ensure proper documentation, quality control and compliance with firm policies and professional standards.
QualificationsCertified Public Accountant (CPA) license in required.8-10+ years of progressive public accounting experience in tax, including prior experience at a Tax Director, Senior Manager or similar leadership level.
Demonstrated expertise with UltraTax & Practice CS tax software, QuickBooks and Trial Balance software.
Strong technical knowledge across multi-state taxation and business entity taxation (C-Corp, S-Corp, Partnerships) and fiduciary tax matters.
Proven experience preparing and reviewing individual and corporate tax returns and performing tax research and planning.
Track record managing multiple client engagements in a fast-paced environment with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent leadership and people management skills with experience mentoring and developing staff.
Superior client-facing skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly and build long-term relationships.
Proficient with Excel and modern tax research tools; comfortable adopting and promoting technology to improve workflows.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; MS in Taxation a plus.
