Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Specialist for a temporary opportunity in Hampton, VA. This role is ideal for a payroll professional who enjoys accurate data processing, employee support, reporting, and collaboration across HR, benefits, and payroll functions. As a Payroll Specialist, you will support payroll operations in a professional government and public sector environment where accuracy, confidentiality, and customer service are essential. This opportunity offers a supportive team atmosphere, steady weekday schedule, and potential remote flexibility after an evaluation period. The role provides valuable hands-on experience in payroll administration, tax-related documentation, employee file maintenance, and timekeeping system reporting. This is a strong opportunity for someone with 1 to 2 years of payroll, HR, accounting, or administrative experience who is looking to grow in a structured, team-focused environment. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare payroll deduction checks, remittance advice, and related payroll documentation.
- Maintain employee master files, including direct deposit information, tax withholdings, and payroll-related updates.
- Generate, review, and analyze reports from the electronic timekeeping system to support accurate payroll processing.
- Verify payroll transactions, including regular compensation, retroactive pay, bonuses, final pay, and leave reimbursements.
- Collaborate with HR, payroll clerks, risk management, and benefits teams to support timely and accurate payroll operations.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, year-end reporting, W-2 processing, and other payroll administration tasks. Compensation and Benefits

$20.00 to $22.00 per hour.Job Type:
Contract/Temporary.Duration:
9 to 12 months.Schedule:
Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.Location:

Onsite, with potential to work 1 day remote after the evaluation period. Required Qualifications and Skills- Support payroll processing, employee file maintenance, and payroll deduction documentation.
- Review timekeeping reports and verify transactions for payroll accuracy.
- Assist with final pay calculations, leave reimbursements, and payroll-related reporting.
- Coordinate with HR, benefits, risk management, and payroll team members to meet deadlines.
- 1 to 2 years of relevant payroll, HR, accounting, administrative, or data entry experience preferred.
- Knowledge of payroll practices and income tax reporting preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong mathematical skills with the ability to compute information quickly and accurately.
- Ability to follow complex instructions, manage detailed records, and work independently.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with employees and the public.
- Ability to manage heavy cyclical workloads while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
- Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills. Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with electronic timekeeping systems.
- Prior experience supporting payroll in a government, public sector, HR, accounting, or benefits administration environment.
- Familiarity with W-2 processing, year-end payroll reporting, retroactive pay, bonuses, and final pay calculations.
