Why does the job exist? The Tax Fraud Investigation Division (TFID) enforces compliance with New Mexico tax laws. The purpose of this position is to examine, analyze and interpret tax accounting records for the purpose of determining compliance with federal and state laws, statutes, rulings and regulations, and generally accepted accounting and auditing standards for the identification of non-compliance and fraud. The position oversees various functions related to the prevention and prosecution of criminal tax fraud cases. The positions also oversees internal investigations, tax auditors, special agents, and forensic analysis, including 21 FTE. How does it get done? The Tax Fraud Deputy Director will provide strategic direction by planning and carrying out the Agency mission, by defining objectives scope, organizational plans and policies of applying professional laws and standards sufficient to conduct complex assignments involving interfaces and interrelationships between and among programs, systems, functions and policies. This position communicates with taxpayers, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), attorneys, employees, managers, customers, legislators and other agencies to achieve the following objectives: Working with the Special Agents to prosecute offenses Engage in criminal litigation, indictments, jury trial, sentencing Advise on legal strategy and complexities, and develop priorities Recommend charging decisions and propose dispositions Who are the customers? The customers include the Taxation and Revenue Department, recipients of State, local and tribal revenue, and the citizens of New Mexico Ideal Candidate The customers include the Taxation and Revenue Department, recipients of State, local and tribal revenue, and the citizens of New Mexico Minimum Qualification Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results. Working Conditions Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting or standing. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Occasional but essential working in loud noise areas in an office setting. Required to frequently meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
