Job Summary:
The Mohs Medical Assistant supports the Mohs surgeon in all aspects of patient care related to Mohs micrographic surgery. This includes pre-operative preparation, intraoperative assistance, tissue processing coordination, and post-operative care. This position is cross-trained in both back-office and front-desk operations. On days when Mohs procedures are not scheduled, the Medical Assistant will assist with clinical back-office duties and provide front-desk support as needed. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong surgical assisting skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and compassion for patients undergoing dermatologic surgery.
Key Responsibilities:
Mohs Surgery Responsibilities Prepare examination and surgical rooms for Mohs procedures, ensuring sterility and readiness of instruments. Greet and prepare patients for surgery, reviewing health histories and surgical consent forms. Assist the Mohs surgeon during all stages of the procedure, including tissue removal, dressing wounds, and documenting site information. Label, transport, and log tissue specimens to the Mohs lab for histological processing. Provide post-operative instructions to patients, including wound care, medication administration, and follow-up appointments. Clean, sterilize, and restock surgical instruments and trays. Maintain accurate medical records and surgical documentation in EMR systems. Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards. Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients to help reduce anxiety related to skin cancer diagnosis and surgical treatment. Front Desk & Back Office Support (Non-Mohs Days) Room patients and assist providers with general dermatology visits and procedures. Obtain and document medical histories and patient information in EMR systems. Support front-desk operations, including patient check-in/check-out, appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and answering phones. Assist with prior authorizations, referrals, and coordination of care. Maintain smooth patient flow and provide excellent customer service. Perform additional administrative and clinical duties as assigned to support overall practice operations.
Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a certified Medical Assistant program preferred.
Certification:
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent strongly preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of experience as a medical assistant, with dermatology or surgical experience preferred. Previous Mohs surgery experience highly desirable, but willing to train the right candidate.
Skills:
Familiarity with dermatologic terminology and Mohs procedure workflow Excellent surgical assisting skills and comfort with sterile technique Proficiency with EMR systems (e.g., Modernizing Medicine, Nextech, EMA) Strong interpersonal and organizational skills Ability to remain calm and compassionate in high-volume clinical and surgical settings Flexibility and willingness to support both clinical and administrative teams Willing to travel within the
