Nursing Services Position Summary Simple & Serene Detox & Recovery is seeking an experienced and compassionate Director of Nursing (DON) to lead nursing services within our detoxification and recovery program. The Director of Nursing is responsible for the leadership, coordination, supervision, and quality of nursing services throughout the facility. The DON ensures clients receive safe, timely, compassionate, and clinically appropriate nursing care throughout the withdrawal-management process. This is a hands-on leadership position . During startup and as census develops, the DON will provide administrative nursing leadership while also assisting with direct client care, admissions, nursing assessments, medication administration, withdrawal monitoring, and nursing shift coverage when necessary. The DON works closely with the Medical Director, medical providers, Clinical Director, Administrator, Operations Manager, RNs, LPNs, BHTs, and other members of the multidisciplinary treatment team.
Licensure Requirements Applicants must:
Hold a current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona or qualifying multistate privilege that permits practice in Arizona. Maintain all licensure requirements throughout employment. Maintain current BLS/CPR certification . Meet all applicable Arizona background, fingerprinting, employment, and facility requirements. A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred but not required unless otherwise required by the facility's applicable licensing, accreditation, payer, or contractual standards. Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesNursing Leadership & Oversight Provide leadership and day-to-day oversight of nursing services. Supervise Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and other assigned nursing personnel. Establish clear nursing standards, expectations, workflows, and accountability. Maintain appropriate nursing coverage based on client census, acuity, and facility requirements. Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff. Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, teamwork, compassion, and accountability. Participate as an active member of the facility leadership team. Collaborate with executive leadership regarding nursing operations, staffing, quality, and program development. Detoxification & Withdrawal Management Oversee nursing services for clients experiencing withdrawal from alcohol and other substances. Ensure appropriate monitoring of withdrawal symptoms and client condition. Ensure nursing personnel follow provider orders, approved withdrawal-management protocols, and facility policies. Oversee implementation and appropriate use of facility-approved withdrawal assessment tools. Ensure significant changes in client condition are promptly communicated to the appropriate medical provider. Monitor clients for potential complications associated with withdrawal and other medical conditions. Ensure emergency medical situations are recognized and escalated appropriately. Work with medical leadership to continually improve withdrawal-management processes and client safety. Nursing Admissions Oversee the nursing component of the admission process. Ensure required nursing assessments are completed accurately and within established timeframes. Review complex or high-risk potential admissions when appropriate. Coordinate with medical providers regarding medical appropriateness and provider orders. Ensure medication reconciliation is completed according to facility procedures. Identify medical concerns requiring additional evaluation. Coordinate with admissions personnel to support efficient and safe admissions. Final medical admission and treatment decisions will be made by appropriately authorized medical professionals consistent with facility policy and applicable scope-of-practice requirements. Medication Management Oversee medication administration and medication-management systems. Ensure medications are stored, secured, administered, documented, and disposed of appropriately. Ensure nursing staff follow provider orders and medication-administration policies. Monitor controlled medication processes and required counts. Investigate medication discrepancies, errors, and adverse events. Ensure medication errors are reported and addressed according to facility procedures. Coordinate pharmacy services and resolve medication-related operational concerns. Monitor medication-management practices for safety and compliance. Nursing Staffing & Scheduling Develop and maintain nursing schedules that provide appropriate facility coverage. Coordinate AM, PM, and overnight nursing coverage . Manage call-outs, vacancies, overtime, PRN utilization, and shift coverage. Participate in interviewing and selection of RNs and LPNs. Assist with onboarding and orientation of nursing personnel. Monitor attendance, punctuality, performance, and professionalism. Evaluate staffing needs as census and client acuity change. Develop a scalable nursing staffing model as the facility grows. Direct Nursing Care During startup and when operationally necessary, the Director of Nursing may provide direct nursing services, including: Nursing assessments and reassessments. Withdrawal monitoring. Vital signs and clinical observations. Medication administration. Client education. Provider communication. Nursing documentation. Admission and discharge nursing functions. Emergency response. Nursing shift coverage. The DON is expected to maintain the clinical competency necessary to step into direct-care operations when needed. Supervision, Training & Competency Orient and train nursing personnel. Ensure nursing staff understand detoxification protocols and emergency procedures. Maintain required nursing competencies. Provide ongoing education regarding substance withdrawal, medications, client safety, documentation, infection control, and emergency response. Conduct employee performance evaluations. Provide coaching and corrective action in coordination with administration. Identify training needs and implement improvement plans. Ensure nursing personnel maintain required licenses, certifications, and competencies. Clinical Documentation & Chart Review Establish and monitor nursing documentation standards. Conduct routine nursing chart audits. Review documentation for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and quality. Monitor nursing assessments, medication records, withdrawal assessments, provider communication, and related records. Address documentation deficiencies promptly. Work with billing and utilization-review personnel when nursing documentation is required to support authorization or reimbursement. Ensure documentation accurately reflects services actually provided and client condition. Medical Provider Coordination Maintain effective communication with the Medical Director, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacy, and other medical resources. Coordinate implementation of medical orders. Establish processes for timely provider notification and consultation. Participate in review and development of standing orders and clinical protocols as authorized. Coordinate provider schedules and medical coverage with leadership as assigned. Escalate significant medical concerns appropriately. Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement Participate in the facility's quality-assurance and performance-improvement program. Monitor nursing-related incidents, medication errors, emergency transfers, adverse events, and other quality indicators. Identify patterns and implement corrective action when necessary. Participate in root-cause analysis and incident review. Develop measurable nursing performance goals. Report significant nursing quality concerns to executive and medical leadership. Promote continuous improvement throughout nursing operations. Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance Help ensure nursing operations comply with applicable Arizona requirements, professional nursing standards, facility policies, payer requirements, and accreditation standards. Participate in preparation for licensing inspections and accreditation surveys. Maintain required nursing records, logs, competencies, and supporting documentation. Participate in development and review of nursing policies and procedures. Assist with corrective action plans resulting from audits, inspections, incidents, or quality reviews. Maintain nursing operations in survey-ready condition. Infection Prevention & Client Safety Support infection-prevention and infection-control practices. Ensure staff follow applicable precautions and safety procedures. Monitor nursing-related environmental and medication safety. Participate in emergency preparedness activities and drills. Ensure appropriate response to medical emergencies and infectious-disease concerns. Promote a safe environment for clients and employees. Multidisciplinary Collaboration Participate in treatment-team and leadership meetings. Collaborate closely with the Clinical Director regarding behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment needs. Work with the Operations Manager regarding staffing, facility operations, supplies, and safety. Communicate with admissions regarding potential and scheduled admissions. Coordinate with BHT personnel regarding client observation and circumstances requiring nursing intervention. Promote effective communication between nursing, medical, clinical, admissions, and operations departments. Required Qualifications Current and unrestricted Arizona RN license or qualifying multistate RN privilege . Graduate of an accredited or approved nursing program. Current BLS/CPR certification. Prior professional nursing experience. Strong nursing assessment and clinical decision-making skills. Experience supervising, mentoring, or leading nursing personnel. Strong medication-management knowledge. Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Two or more years of nursing leadership or supervisory experience. Previous Director of Nursing, Assistant DON, Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, or comparable leadership experience. Experience in detoxification or withdrawal management . Substance use disorder treatment experience. Behavioral health or psychiatric nursing experience. Experience in residential treatment, inpatient behavioral health, emergency medicine, or another 24-hour healthcare environment. Knowledge of alcohol and substance withdrawal protocols. Experience working with individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Experience with Joint Commission or other healthcare accreditation standards. The Director of Nursing's primary schedule will generally be during daytime business hours; however, this is a leadership position within a 24-hour healthcare operation and requires flexibility. The DON may be required to: Assist with AM, PM, or overnight nursing coverage when necessary. Respond to significant nursing or medical operational concerns after hours. Participate in an administrative or nursing on-call rotation. Provide weekend or holiday leadership coverage as needed.
