The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical instruction to students enrolled in the Vocational Nursing Program. The instructor prepares students with the nursing knowledge, clinical skills, professional behaviors, critical-thinking abilities, and patient-care competencies necessary to practice safely as entry-level vocational nurses. The LVN Instructor serves as an educator, clinical role model, mentor, and evaluator while promoting a professional learning environment focused on patient safety, nursing standards, ethical practice, and student success. Primary Responsibilities Deliver classroom, laboratory, simulation, and/or clinical instruction according to the approved Vocational Nursing curriculum. Develop and implement lesson plans, instructional activities, demonstrations, assignments, and student learning activities. Teach fundamental nursing concepts, including patient safety, infection control, nursing procedures, communication, documentation, and patient-centered care. Provide instruction in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, maternal and newborn nursing, pediatric nursing, geriatric nursing, and mental health concepts as assigned. Demonstrate and supervise appropriate nursing skills and clinical procedures. Teach students how to obtain and document vital signs and perform basic patient assessments. Provide instruction regarding medication administration, dosage calculations, medication safety, and documentation within the vocational nurse's scope of practice. Teach wound care, infection prevention, specimen collection, catheter care, mobility assistance, activities of daily living, and other appropriate nursing procedures. Reinforce appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), standard precautions, bloodborne pathogen precautions, and workplace safety procedures. Supervise students during nursing laboratory, simulation, and clinical experiences as assigned. Monitor students closely during clinical activities to promote patient and student safety. Evaluate students' clinical skills and document competency according to program requirements. Administer examinations, quizzes, skills assessments, clinical evaluations, assignments, and other assessments. Maintain accurate student attendance, grades, clinical records, competency documentation, and academic records. Identify students who require remediation and provide appropriate academic or clinical support. Teach professional nursing ethics, confidentiality, HIPAA awareness, patient rights, cultural awareness, communication, and professional boundaries. Reinforce the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with vocational nursing practice. Assist students in developing critical-thinking, clinical judgment, prioritization, time-management, and communication skills. Prepare students for successful program completion and eligibility for the applicable nursing licensure examination. Maintain appropriate classroom and clinical management and enforce school and program policies. Participate in faculty meetings, curriculum development, program evaluations, student orientations, and other institutional activities. Maintain communication with program leadership regarding student progress, attendance, clinical performance, safety concerns, and academic issues. Immediately report patient-care concerns, student injuries, exposures, medication errors, clinical incidents, or other safety issues according to program policy. Maintain professional conduct and serve as a positive nursing role model for students. Clinical Instructor Responsibilities When assigned to clinical instruction, the LVN Instructor may also be responsible for: Supervising students at approved clinical facilities. Providing pre-clinical and post-clinical conferences. Reviewing student clinical assignments and patient-care documentation. Evaluating students' ability to safely perform assigned nursing procedures. Ensuring students follow the policies and procedures of the clinical facility and nursing program. Communicating with clinical facility staff regarding student learning experiences. Ensuring students practice only within their authorized student role and level of demonstrated competency. Maintaining appropriate instructor availability and supervision throughout the clinical experience. Documenting student clinical performance and providing constructive feedback. Instructor Expectations The LVN Instructor must demonstrate strong nursing knowledge, professionalism, leadership, communication, organization, patience, and sound clinical judgment. The instructor should create an educational environment that encourages students to become compassionate, competent, ethical, and safety-conscious nurses. The instructor is expected to maintain current knowledge of nursing practice, vocational nursing education, patient-safety standards, infection-control procedures, applicable nursing laws and regulations, and the school's approved curriculum. Qualifications Candidates should possess qualifications appropriate for the instructional assignment and applicable nursing education requirements, which may include: Current, valid, and unencumbered Texas nursing license appropriate for the faculty position. Nursing education from an appropriately recognized nursing education program. Professional nursing experience relevant to the subjects and clinical areas being taught. Current CPR/BLS certification when required for the instructional or clinical assignment. Demonstrated knowledge of nursing standards, patient safety, medication administration, infection control, documentation, and clinical procedures. Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate students in classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical environments. Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and classroom-management skills. Previous experience as a nurse educator, clinical instructor, preceptor, charge nurse, trainer, or supervisor is preferred. Ability to satisfy applicable Texas Board of Nursing faculty requirements for the assigned position. Position Purpose The purpose of the LVN Instructor position is to prepare students to become safe, competent, compassionate, professional, and employment-ready vocational nurses . Through classroom instruction, skills laboratory training, simulation, clinical experiences, assessments, and professional development, the instructor helps students develop the competencies necessary to successfully complete the Vocational Nursing Program and pursue licensure as a vocational nurse. The LVN Instructor plays an essential role in maintaining the quality and integrity of the nursing program by ensuring students receive appropriate education, supervision, evaluation, and preparation for professional nursing practice.
