Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Works closely with physicians, service coordinators and other staff providing care and treatment to consumers, with the Adult Behavioral Unit Program and particularly with the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) workers during crisis and Intervention Team. Works cooperatively with other mental health professionals to coordinate and deliver services. Follows-up on Physician Orders, laboratory orders, provides injections and other methods of medication administration as needed.

Provides psychiatric nursing care and community-based services to acquire or improve skills in areas such as medication administration, medication monitoring, monitoring side effects and symptoms, health education and nutrition, problem solving related to accessing services and care, and other areas of education and skills training. Reports and documents medication errors, performs functions related to medication tracking, signing in and out medications, storage and disposal of medications and other medication control and dispensing activities. Implements Center infection control procedures, utilizes personal protection kits and performs other Nursing functions as required. Nursing decisions are made based on well-defined medical practice guidelines and position is required to maintain current knowledge of Nursing and Medical practices and procedures. Assists with referring non-insured clients to Patient Assistance Program to maximize cost savings.

Education and Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited school or program in Vocational Nursing
• Licensed to practice in the State of Texas as a Licensed Vocational Nurse
• Valid Texas Driver's License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge of local, state and Federal laws and regulations relevant to Community Mental Health and to specific Program area of assignment
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of Nursing and Pharmacology
• Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures, rules and regulations and laws
• Knowledge, skills and abilities to devise immediate solutions and be proactive in dealing with nursing, administrative and support functions and issues
• Ability to read, write and compose concise reports and other written documents used to guide services delivery and meet the needs and mission of the Center and Division
• Knowledge of general practices of the unit of assignment within the Mental Health (MH) Division
• Ability to foster and maintain positive work relationships
• Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion in all aspects of work
• Ability to apply ethical and nursing practices and professional nursing skills, techniques and methods
• Knowledge of rehabilitation processes, acquisition of skills, general mental illness and community resources for nursing needs
• Knowledge, skills and abilities in medication management, education and monitoring and skills in medication administration, storage, control and disposal
