Monday-Friday during business hours, with limited off-hours availability Position status: Contingent upon contract award Job Summary We are seeking an experienced physician to serve as a part-time Medical Director supporting a large public-sector Employee Disability Program in Philadelphia. This is primarily a non-clinical position focused on occupational health oversight, workers' compensation, disability pension determinations, medical quality improvement and provider-network performance. The Medical Director will collaborate with another Medical Director and report to the program's Risk Management leadership. Work may be completed remotely or on-site, although attendance at designated weekly and monthly meetings is required. Key Responsibilities Provide medical oversight for an employee disability and occupational health program. Review medical care provided to employees injured while performing their jobs. Monitor allegations of medical negligence and employee grievances. Evaluate the use of elective surgery, physical therapy, durable medical equipment and narcotic prescriptions. Review medical outcomes and recommend improvements to treatment quality and return-to-work practices. Develop, revise and monitor occupational-health treatment protocols. Collaborate with treating physicians, medical facilities, claims adjusters, case managers and the program's third-party administrator. Chair monthly meetings with treating physicians, facility administrators and program leadership. Attend weekly Employee Disability Unit meetings, generally held on Wednesdays. Complete approximately 235 service-connected disability pension reviews annually. Review medical records and issue timely written opinions concerning permanent partial or total disability and work-related causation. Interview employees when necessary to complete disability determinations. Review proposed in-network and out-of-network medical providers. Conduct vocational-rehabilitation reviews and determinations. Provide periodic training concerning occupational injuries and illnesses. Testify before administrative commissions or arbitration hearings when requested. Remain reasonably reachable for rare, urgent off-hours medical consultation. Prepare accurate monthly documentation of services and hours worked. Minimum Qualifications MD or DO degree. Active Pennsylvania physician license, or retirement from Pennsylvania practice in good standing as permitted by the client. Current board certification through a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties. At least five years of experience in one or more of the following: Occupational Medicine Internal Medicine Family Medicine Knowledge of Pennsylvania workers' compensation requirements. Experience reviewing complex medical records and preparing written medical determinations. Ability to commit approximately 20 hours per week. Availability for weekly Wednesday meetings and monthly Medical Director meetings. Strong written, analytical and verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain HIPAA compliance and protect confidential medical information. Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other standard office technology. Ability to obtain and maintain the required professional liability coverage. Preferred Qualifications Board certification in Occupational Medicine. Experience with ACOEM guidelines. Experience with public-sector employee disability programs. Experience conducting disability, pension or return-to-work evaluations. Familiarity with Pennsylvania Heart and Lung Act claims and Civil Service disability programs. Prior experience testifying in administrative or arbitration proceedings. Experience overseeing occupational-health provider networks. Experience reviewing approximately 200 or more disability cases annually.
