The Dental Director is a clinical and operational leader responsible for providing high-quality patient care while serving as a key leader, mentor, and clinical resource for the dental providers within the practice. This position combines hands-on clinical dentistry with dental leadership, provider development, quality oversight, operational performance, and practice growth. The Dental Director is expected to lead by example—maintaining an active patient schedule while establishing clinical standards, developing providers, supporting practice teams, and partnering with executive and operational leadership to achieve organizational objectives. This role requires a highly engaged dental professional who can balance clinical excellence, business acumen, team leadership, patient experience, compliance, and provider accountability. Key Responsibilities 1. Clinical Leadership & Patient Care Maintain an active clinical schedule and provide comprehensive dental care to patients. Deliver exceptional, ethical, evidence-based patient care consistent with organizational standards. Support diagnosis, treatment planning, case acceptance, complex treatment, and clinical decision-making. Review challenging or complex cases and provide appropriate clinical guidance. Promote appropriate utilization of clinical resources, technology, and treatment modalities. Maintain strong patient relationships and address escalated clinical concerns when appropriate. Mentor, coach, and develop dentists and clinical providers. Establish clear expectations for clinical quality, productivity, documentation, and patient care. Identify provider development opportunities and establish individualized improvement plans when needed. Assist with onboarding, orientation, and integration of new dentists. Foster a team environment of collaboration, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement. 4. Practice Performance & Operations Partner with the Practice Manager and operational leadership to improve practice performance. Monitor key clinical and operational performance indicators. Evaluate provider productivity, scheduling efficiency, treatment acceptance, patient retention, and clinical capacity. Collaborate with front-office and clinical teams to improve patient flow and the overall patient experience. Help ensure appropriate utilization of operatories, equipment, technology, and clinical resources. 5. Patient Experience Champion a patient-centered culture throughout the practice. Model exceptional communication and service standards. Assist in resolving escalated patient concerns involving clinical care. Promote treatment education and appropriate case presentation. Identify opportunities to improve patient retention, treatment acceptance, and overall satisfaction. 6. Clinical Team Collaboration Work closely with hygienists, dental assistants, treatment coordinators, patient care coordinators, and practice leadership. Promote effective communication between clinical and administrative teams. Establish expectations for teamwork, professionalism, and accountability. Support cross-functional problem solving. Encourage a culture where team members are comfortable escalating clinical concerns appropriately. Participate in practice expansion, integration, and growth initiatives. Qualifications Required Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Active, unrestricted dental license in the applicable state(s). Minimum of 5 years of clinical dental experience, preferably in a multi-provider or multi-practice environment. Demonstrated leadership or mentorship experience. Strong clinical judgment and treatment-planning capabilities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with dentists and multidisciplinary dental teams.
