Position Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist is to help improve access, enrollment, and engagement in mental health and substance use disorder services for clients in immediate crisis.

Essential Job Functions:

Provide support services, especially in terms of escorting to indicated resources and ensuring that the linkage is made; Answer and refer incoming telephone calls, and tracking same through the use of the EHR Advocate and support clients in immediate crisis; Assist client in utilizing community resources by discussing common experiences and walking them through the process of attaining services and accessing available resources. Serve as role model for clients by sharing own recovery process and offering effective coping techniques and self-help strategies. Encourage client engagement and self-management to promote wellness and recovery; Assist clients in combating negative self-talk, overcoming fears, and learning how to problem solve; Offer guidance about issues involving drug and/or alcohol abuse, domestic violence, legal requirements, funding requirements, and other issues as identified by clients; Refer clients to appropriate persons within the community in order to best address needs, issues and concerns; Refer clients to mutual support groups, as appropriate; Participate in establishing new and effective mutual support groups on-site for the benefit of the clients; Provide psycho-education with focus on illness management and peer support. Participate in staff meetings as required; Filing, copying, and faxing, as requested; Attend training and meetings as assigned; Maintains accurate, thorough records on all assigned cases and uses documentation to assist clients in evaluating progress. Comply with confidentiality requirements, including 42 CFR part 2; Comply with all agency practices, policies and procedures, and make recommendations as to better meeting the needs of clients we serve; Maintain a constant interest in helping clients, as appropriate; Perform community/interagency outreach and development of referral sources; Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Must have lived experience with and managing a mental illness, and/or substance use disorder in sustained recovery and be certified by the California Mental Health Services Administration as a Peer Support Specialist. Good communication skills. Knowledge of basic office system and practices. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred Valid CA driver's License and proof of personal insurance. Must be clean and sober. Must be able to pass a criminal history background screening, maintain a yearly CPR Certification, First Aid Certification, physical exam, and Tuberculosis test results. Maintain mandated educational requirements for positions with a license, certification, or registration; in addition to any contractor required trainings.

Education:

Medi- Cal Peer Support Specialist certificate by The California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA) state-approved educational institution (minimum requirement).

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily performed in the field alongside Law Enforcement; Some office activities may be required; Physical Demands Occasional lifting more than 15 pounds; Sitting, standing, walking, reaching are performed in the normal course of a shift; The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, BUT exposure or potential exposure may be required as a condition of employment. Appropriate personal protective equipment will be readily available to every employee engaged in potential exposure.

Supervision Supervision:

The employee performs a variety of routine tasks, works within established policies and procedures, and receives detailed instructions on new projects and assignments from Program Manager.

Supervision Given:

This position does not provide supervisory responsibilities.

$23.06 - $25.01 per hour
