Mercy is seeking a dedicated Charge Nurse to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. Responsibilities Provide direct and indirect leadership for nursing staff during assigned shifts, serving as the primary clinical resource and point of escalation on the unit. Coordinate and oversee day to day unit operations, including patient flow, admissions, discharges, and transfers to ensure safe, efficient care delivery. Assess staffing needs and patient acuity; create and adjust daily nurse and support staff assignments to balance workloads and maintain quality standards. Support and mentor nursing staff, including coaching on clinical issues, facilitating problem solving, and promoting professional growth and competency. Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans and ensure effective communication and handoffs. Promote and monitor adherence to hospital policies, clinical protocols, infection prevention practices, and regulatory and safety requirements. Participate in and support quality improvement, patient safety, and patient experience initiatives, using data and feedback to drive improvements. Assist with onboarding and orientation of new nurses and support staff; serve as a preceptor or resource for students and novice nurses as needed. Respond promptly to emergencies and high acuity situations, providing advanced clinical support and coordination of team response. Required Skills Clinical assessment and critical thinking Acute care nursing skills (e.g., IV therapy, medication administration, wound care) Care coordination and patient flow management Staff assignment and workload balancing Interdisciplinary communication and collaboration Electronic Health Record (EHR) documentation (e.g., Epic or similar) Time management and prioritization in fast paced settings Conflict resolution and de escalation Patient and family education Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS) Infection prevention and control practices Leadership, coaching, and mentoring of staff
