As one of the Occupational Therapists on our team you will provide driver evaluation and training related to the specific driver rehabilitation services contracted. Services are provided for clients identified with or suspected of having disabilities that may interfere with their ability to drive a motor vehicle independently. Professional judgment and clinical knowledge are used to develop individualized interventions based on occupational performance deficits in the area of driving and community mobility. The occupational therapist is expected to independently review the client's intake information, progress, and modify intervention strategies. Clinical reasoning and professional judgment are essential to ensuring the safety of clients. Occupational Therapist Job Summary Looking for an occupational therapist with a strong desire to help people and improve their daily lives by gaining independent driving ability. As an occupational therapist, you will assess patients' conditions, needs, and goals to establish the ability to be an independent driver and set a treatment plan to achieve this goal, including prescribing the required adaptive driving controls. You will communicate with clients, their family/friends/caregivers, and medical providers while being compassionate and sensitive to a patient's concerns. You will communicate with vehicle modifiers, DMV Medical personnel, and DMV examiners. Occupational Therapist Duties and Responsibilities Provides comprehensive evaluation of an individual's abilities or potential to become a safe and independent driver. The evaluation includes review of medical and driving history; a clinical evaluation of physical, visual, perceptual and cognitive skills; and assessment of seating needs where applicable. It includes an on the road assessment in an actual driving environment using equipment when needed similar to that which may be recommended. All clinical tests must be relevant to the task of driving. Provides or makes recommendations for targeted, evidence-based intervention to facilitate component skill deficits and occupational performance towards the goal of driver independence. Provides consultation to direct the client to the optimal outcome for their individual needs. Consultation may include aiding in vehicle selection, consulting regarding the stowage of a mobility device, providing input regarding seating concerns behind the wheel, or other concerns. Provides wheelchair and/or seating and positioning evaluation as it relates to driving. Interfaces appropriate vehicle modifications with regards to fiscal stewardship and functional interact to help maximize client's independent driving ability. Provides driver training, with or without adaptive equipment, in a vehicle that is matched to the driver's individual needs, including adaptive equipment as necessary. Training includes progression to licensure as appropriate as well as procurement of appropriate licensure restrictions. Monitors and reassess the effects of intervention (directly provided by the therapist or provided by another colleague) and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue intervention. Independently seeks assistance from supervisor regarding difficult cases or situations. Documents occupational therapy services to ensure accountability of service provision and to meet standards for reimbursement of services. Prioritizes and schedules work tasks independently. Communicates regularly with the office and communicates schedule changes to as soon as they are recognized. Maintains clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and Driver Rehabilitation Services, P.A. policy. Adheres to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies that affect occupational therapy practice. Analyze the best exercises and activities to help the patient reach goals Discuss patient's goals with the patient's physicians Develop plans for patients with ongoing pain and chronic conditions Recommend and educate patients on medical and adaptive equipment (wheelchairs, leg braces, etc.) Record patient activities, progress, and improvement Maintain clinical records of all patient care; fill and document for insurance billing Occupational Therapist Requirements and Qualifications Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in occupational therapy with a certificate, or diploma for successful completion of a post-degree program in occupational therapy Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR) License and proof of passing the national examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy(NBCOT) Continuing education classes for maintenance of certification Meets all state licensure requirements Must be wanting a specialty practice Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently Excellent verbal and written communication skills Adaptable, flexible, and able to make quick decisions when plans change Creative and innovative thinker and planner Encouraging to patients and staff Full time, per diem position for a therapist looking to develop a specialty skill in OT.
