Job Description

Job Summary Conducts fitness classes following guidelines established by the Wellness Center Manager, in accordance with national certification organizations to ensure a safe, effective, and fun workout.
Competency:
Silver Sneakers Create and ensure a safe and welcoming environment. Ability to enforce policies, problem solve, and handle emergency situations. Ability to assist and communicate with all populations of people regardless of race, age, and special needs. Attending training when appropriate. Perform all tasks to the best of your ability and with a positive attitude. Arrive 5-10 minutes before each exercise class and stay 5-10 minutes after to socialize with participants and answer any questions. Clean up and put away any exercise equipment and/or mats used for class. Stay aware of participants' health issues and instruct safe and proper technique. Walk around and talk with members and guests and get to know their fitness goals and backgrounds. Continually educating oneself and staying aware of new fitness trends. Take proper class attendance and report class size and attendances to the Health and Wellness Director. Respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies or any injury that occurs.
Competency:
Skills Communication- be clear and concise. Speak loud enough for all to hear. Be energetic and have a great attitude. Knowledge of fitness safety standards and guidelines. Choreography design. Skill modification for various fitness levels. Hazard Inherent to exercise and safety practices to minimize exposure. Emergency protocol. Silver Sneakers Format and Foundations Training.
Competency:
Additional Activities Understand community needs in fitness / wellness and evaluate activities according to those needs. Monitor program compliance with related law / standards, regulations, and guidelines. Effectively use good customer service skills. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, other city employees and officials, community groups, the public and media representatives. Provide your own substitute instructor, from the fitness staff roster, to instruct your assigned class. Substitute for other fitness instructors when needed. Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as outlined by the Fitness Coordinator. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the fitness fi eld (attend workshops, read fitness publications, visit other fitness facility classes). Assist in training and advising other instructors. Assigned:
Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Completes all required competency assessments on time. Responsibilities 1 month of Fitness Instruction is required. Must be able adequately trained to teach safely and effectively and make it fun. Must attend various fitness workshops to support current fitness standards. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to perform moderate physical work. To lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally more, preferred. Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, kneel, twist, and perform similar body movements. Possesses hand / eye / foot coordination adequate to teach a fitness class. Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, recreation, and athletic programs in progress. Education High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Credentials Group Fitness Instructor Certification Silver Sneaker Certification- Current CPR/ First Aid Certifications to teach various fitness classes preferred.
