A Personal Trainer or Fitness Instructor develops customized exercise and fitness programs for clients. Reviews health and fitness goals, teaches correct and safe exercise technique, monitors progress and provides encouragement for clients. Leads fitness and exercise classes at a community center, club or pool. Teaches aerobics, water, strength building or other exercises and maintains equipment.

Job Description

Under general supervision, this position instructs patrons in specified adult group fitness classes (i.e., water aerobics, Zumba, Land Aerobics, etc). This position reports to the Recreation Programs Supervisor in charge of the program assignment. Instructors do not exercise supervision over other positions. The following functions & duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address City needs and changing business practices. Instruct patrons in specialized recreational group fitness classes (i.e., water aerobics). Interact with patrons with a professional manner. Perform other related job duties as assigned.
Knowledge of :
Area of instruction Ability to : Effectively teach. Follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. Possess physical conditioning required to perform duties as an instructor in the specialized recreational activity. All instructor positions require the ability to effectively lead citizens in a comprehensive workout in the appropriate category.
Minimum Age Requirement :
Must be 15 years of age or older.
License/Certification :
Current CPR and First Aid certifications. Certification(s) in the area specialization ( Zumba, Group Cycling, Pump 'N Flex, Water Aerobics, etc.).
Experience:
Any combination of education, training, and experience that would provide necessary instruction skills and expertise in area of instruction Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment : Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, twist, and grasp; work with hands above shoulder height with up to 40 lbs.; work with arms extended at shoulder height with up to 20 lbs.; lift or carry 50 lbs. or less and push and/or pull heavy weights (over 75 lbs) on a regular basis; and exposure to hot, cold, and outdoors.
