A Medical Surgery Registered Nurse cares for adult patients in a clinical setting within a surgery. Works on the surgical floor of a hospital, with supervision from a Surgeon as part of a surgery nursing team. Coordinates care for patients with a range of different medical issues.
The R.N. assumes responsibility/accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care to these patients via therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment, and other health care team members. Ages served range from pediatric to geriatric.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1.
Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the maintenance of the patient during the pre and post recovery surgical periods. 2. Responsible for planning, assessing, intervening, co-coordinating and providing direct patient care by utilizing critical thinking skills. 3. Communicates with physicians, ancillary care-givers, patients and families regarding the patient's plan of care. 4. Performs assessments including physical, psychosocial, nutritional, functional, safety, spiritual, cultural, and educational needs. 5. Complete supporting documentation and accountability for supplies, medications, labs, charges, and equipment used. 6. Documents patient assessment data on the appropriate nursing record / EMR including but not limited to: vital signs, treatments, education provided, assessment data, and effectiveness of administration. 7. Demonstrates patient and employee safety issues by regular and proper use of patient/resident lifts and other equipment provided by the hospital. Follows policy for use of lifting equipment and gait belts to lift and transfer. 8. Reviews various test results and takes appropriate actions. 9. Makes nursing decisions regarding patient status and immediate care needs. 10. Provides patient and family education. 11. Knowledge of the perioperative process. 12. Assists in other areas of the department. 13. Coordinates care to RNs on the Surgical Unit. 14. Assists in patient care assignment appropriately based on individual abilities, patient acuity and resources available. 15. Participates in Unit based Quality Improvements Projects and routine Quality and Environmental monitoring. 16. Maintains unit specific competencies and participates in review of the high-risk/ low-frequency competencies. 17. Identifies opportunities to improve patient care and utilize evidence-based resources to optimize nursing practice. 18. Maintains confidentiality, demonstrates compassion, empathy, and respect to all customers and staff. 19. Demonstrates and actively promotes an understanding and commitment to the mission of Morrison Community Hospital. 20. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Active registration for Registered Nurse - Board of Nursing, State of Illinois. Must be BLS, ACLS and PALS certified. 3. Current knowledge of AORN standards. 4. Knowledge of Standard Precautions for exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens. 5. Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills. 6. Must be capable of problem solving, critical thinking, and assessment of patient conditions. 7. Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills in a Windows environment. 8. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. 9. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in a patient care environment which may include exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous waste and exposure to conditions that could be considered disagreeable to sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste. Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities, physical abilities, and work styles. Must be able to set and organize own work priorities, and adapt to them as they change frequently.
