Job Description

As a Nurse Extern at Encompass Health, you will support RNs and the interdisciplinary rehab team in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. Under direct supervision, you'll assist with vital signs, mobility, hygiene, and documentation while learning specialized rehabilitation practices. Gain hands-on experience with diverse patient populations recovering from major illnesses and injuries in a collaborative, clinically advanced environment. This role offers structured learning, mentorship, and exposure to care planning, therapy coordination, and core nursing skills to prepare you for a future RN role. Responsibilities Assist RNs with direct patient care in an inpatient rehabilitation setting Obtain and record vital signs, intake and output, and patient observations Support patient mobility, transfers, and ADLs using safe handling techniques Maintain patient comfort, hygiene, and a clean, safe environment Document care and observations in the electronic medical record per policy Follow infection prevention and safety protocols at all times Collaborate with nurses, therapists, and physicians in care coordination Assist with admission, discharge, and patient education activities Report changes in patient condition promptly to supervising RNParticipate in learning opportunities, in-services, and clinical coaching Required Skills Vital signs monitoring Patient hygiene and comfort care Electronic medical record documentation Infection control practices Safe patient handling and mobility Basic wound and skin care Intake and output measurement Team-based interdisciplinary care Patient and family communication Basic medical terminology
