Job Summary The Patient Registrar is responsible for registering patients accurately and efficiently for emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services. The role includes collecting demographic and insurance information, verifying insurance eligibility, obtaining prior authorizations, collecting copays and deductibles, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and providing excellent customer service. The registrar works closely with clinical staff to support accurate billing and regulatory reporting. Key Responsibilities Register patients for emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services. Collect and verify patient demographic and insurance information. Ensure registration accuracy (98% or higher). Obtain insurance authorizations and verify benefits and eligibility. Collect copays, deductibles, and other patient payments. Complete required admission documents, including: Understand and comply with EMTALA, HIPAA, Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMO, PPO, Workers' Compensation, and commercial insurance requirements. Answer billing questions or refer patients to financial counselors when appropriate. Communicate benefit and authorization information to clinical staff. Answer telephone calls professionally and provide excellent customer service. Maintain adequate supplies and registration forms. Work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other departments. Assist with problem-solving to improve patient satisfaction and revenue cycle performance. Required Qualifications Education High school diploma or GED. Experience Minimum of one year of experience in hospital patient registration, admitting, or a physician's office. Skills & Knowledge Knowledge of commercial, government, and workers' compensation insurance. Insurance verification and eligibility experience. Medical terminology knowledge. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Attention to detail and data entry accuracy.
