Role:
The Central Service Technician plays a critical role in maintaining the cleanliness, sterilization, and proper functioning of medical instruments and equipment used throughout healthcare facilities. This position ensures that all surgical and diagnostic tools are thoroughly decontaminated, inspected, assembled, and sterilized according to strict regulatory and safety standards. The technician collaborates closely with clinical staff to provide timely and reliable instrument availability, directly impacting patient care quality and safety. Additionally, the role involves maintaining accurate records of sterilization processes and equipment maintenance to comply with healthcare regulations. Ultimately, the Central Service Technician supports the healthcare team by ensuring a sterile environment that minimizes infection risks and promotes optimal patient outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a Central Service Technician training program or equivalent experience in sterile processing. Basic knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and medical terminology. Ability to follow detailed protocols and maintain accurate records. Physical ability to stand for extended periods and handle medical instruments safely.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or equivalent. Experience working in a hospital or clinical sterile processing department. Familiarity with inventory management systems and electronic record-keeping. Knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance procedures. Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities:
Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and medical equipment using appropriate methods and sterilization technologies. Inspect instruments for damage or wear and perform minor repairs or coordinate with biomedical services for maintenance. Assemble surgical instrument sets according to established protocols and ensure their readiness for upcoming procedures. Maintain detailed documentation of sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, and inventory management. Adhere to infection control policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe working environment. Collaborate with healthcare professionals to prioritize instrument processing based on surgical schedules and emergencies. Operate and troubleshoot sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, and washers.
