Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for decontamination of instruments at the completion of surgical procedures, processing those instruments for use on subsequent cases, sterilizing reusable instruments and/or supplies, and maintaining adequate levels of supplies used in surgery. Also performs quality control procedures and maintains records. Must take call on a rotating basis.
Job Specific:
Sort, disassemble, clean and disinfect trays, instruments, carts, supplies and equipment (EF). Select and use appropriate cleaning methods (EF). Load, operate and maintain cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing equipment (EF). Perform standard tests to monitor the effectiveness of sterilization procedures (EF). Sort, assemble and package medical / surgical instruments and equipment (EF). Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment and supplies (EF). Store and rotate sterilized items (EF). Provide instrument sets for surgical procedures and case carts for booked and emergency surgery (EF). Inventory, select and replenish supplies to medical / surgical carts on a regular basis, and monitor quota levels and changes in demand levels (EF). Make appropriate substitutions when necessary and report problems regarding availability of instruments and supplies (EF). Use computers to order supplies, process and maintain records (EF). Communicate with operating room personnel to provide required instruments and surgical supplies (EF). Routinely handle items that weigh up to 45 pounds and move loaded sterilization carts that weigh much more (EF). Must observe safety precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to infectious diseases and injury from hot surfaces (EF).
Hospital:
Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures. Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital's Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations. Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital's Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines. Performs within his/her professional Scope of Practice at all times.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Required:
High school diploma or equivalency sufficient to permit proper handling of written work and understand verbal orders.
EXPERIENCE
Preferred:
At least six (6) months of previous experience in OR Sterile Processing; On-the-job training is offered
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required:
Effective interpersonal communications skills; Skill in maintenance of equipment; Ability to follow written and oral instructions
