Please independently verify any critical information before relying on it. Description Pine Animal Hospital is hiring a full-time associate veterinarian to join our independently owned, doctor-led small animal hospital in Long Beach, California. We are committed to the highest standards of ethical, high-quality veterinary medicine. That means thoughtful diagnostics, honest recommendations, strong client communication, individualized treatment plans, and the willingness to consider multiple evidence-informed approaches when determining what is best for each patient. Our medicine is not restricted to a single rigid model. We combine high-quality conventional veterinary medicine with appropriate integrative options, emerging diagnostic technology, specialist collaboration, and ongoing clinical education. This position is designed for a veterinarian who wants to practice thoughtful general practice and urgent care medicine with strong technician support, modern diagnostics, clinical autonomy, and access to experienced doctors and specialists.
POSITION AT A GLANCE
Four 10-hour shifts per week Regular weekend shifts required Weekend shifts are part of the four-day schedule, not an additional fifth day No overnight or on-call responsibilities Guaranteed base compensation with 23% monthly production Expected total annual compensation of $150,000
  • 200,000 Experienced veterinarians and motivated newer graduates considered Potential ownership or partnership pathway for the right long-term fit
SCHEDULE AND WEEKEND EXPECTATIONS
Pine Animal Hospital is moving to a seven-day operating schedule so our clients can continue receiving dependable same-day and next-day care. Full-time doctors work four 10-hour shifts each week. Regular Saturday and/or Sunday shifts are a required part of the position and will be incorporated into the doctor's established weekly schedule. This is not a weekday-only position. We want to be completely transparent about that expectation. In return, doctors retain a four-day workweek with three days away from work each week.
ETHICAL MEDICINE, INTEGRATIVE CARE, AND CLINICAL INNOVATION
Pine Animal Hospital is committed to practicing medicine with integrity. Financial production never determines what a doctor is expected to recommend. Our doctors are expected to evaluate each patient thoughtfully, communicate options honestly, respect the client's role in decision-making, and recommend care based on the patient's actual medical needs. We practice evidence-informed integrative medicine alongside high-quality conventional veterinary care. Depending on the individual patient, this may include nutritional strategies, rehabilitation, supplements, multimodal pain management, complementary therapies, and other carefully selected approaches. Integrative medicine at Pine is not a rejection of science or conventional treatment. It is a willingness to consider additional tools when they are medically appropriate and may improve a patient's health or quality of life. Pine Animal Hospital also participates in clinical trials involving emerging diagnostic technologies and novel methods of earlier disease detection. This gives our doctors opportunities to engage with developing areas of veterinary medicine while maintaining appropriate clinical judgment, informed client communication, and patient safeguards. The hospital is led by Dr. Steve Manyak, who serves as a licensee member of the California Veterinary Medical Board, is an IDEXX Regional Thought Leader, and regularly speaks to veterinary professionals through continuing education programs. These roles contribute to a hospital culture that values professional accountability, lifelong learning, clinical innovation, and the continued advancement of independent veterinary medicine.
COMPENSATION AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT
Compensation includes a guaranteed base with monthly production compensation calculated at 23%. A proficient full-time veterinarian can realistically earn $150,000
  • 200,000 annually, depending on experience, schedule, caseload, and production.
Additional professional support includes:
Paid continuing education aligned with your clinical interests Professional liability insurance California licensing and professional dues Paid time off Employee pet-care benefits Relocation or temporary housing assistance when appropriate Mentorship, case collaboration, and clinical development Ownership or partnership opportunity
MEDICINE AND CLINICAL SUPPORT
Doctors are trusted to think through cases, recommend care ethically, communicate honestly with clients, and use diagnostics appropriately. Production compensation rewards the work performed, but production does not dictate medical recommendations.
Our doctors have access to:
Strong technician support In-house laboratory and same-visit diagnostics Digital radiography Dental radiography Point-of-care ultrasound Rapid in-clinic cytology Integrated medical records with laboratory results, imaging, and reports Board-certified surgical support Cardiology, internal medicine, and radiology collaboration General practice, urgent care, dentistry, surgery, wellness, and integrative medicine Participation in clinical trials involving emerging diagnostic technologies Ongoing exposure to continuing education, clinical research, and developing standards of care A hospital culture built around ethical recommendations, clinical accountability, and lifelong learning
WHO MAY THRIVE AT PINE
This position may be a strong fit if: You genuinely enjoy veterinary medicine and want to continue growing clinically You want to practice thoughtful, high-quality small animal medicine You value diagnostics, client communication, and ethical recommendations You enjoy general practice but also want exposure to urgent care and more advanced medical cases You want technicians who are actively involved in patient care You value collaboration with other doctors and specialists You want a four-day workweek and understand that regular weekend coverage is part of the position You are interested in dentistry, surgery, ultrasound, internal medicine, urgent care, integrative medicine, leadership, or mentorship You may eventually be interested in helping lead or own an independent veterinary hospital
OWNERSHIP POTENTIAL
Pine Animal Hospital is committed to remaining an independent veterinary hospital. For the right veterinarians who prove to be strong, long-term clinical, cultural, and leadership fits, we are open to a genuine ownership or partnership pathway. Ownership is not required, and no promises are made before both sides have had the opportunity to work together. However, this is a real possibility for someone who wants to help shape the future of an independent veterinary practice.
START WITH A CONFIDENTIAL CONVERSATION
You do not need to submit a formal application or be actively job hunting to speak with us. Confidential inquiries are welcome. Contact Dr. Steve Manyak directly at dr.steve@pineanimalhospital.com or (562) 912-7463 to begin with a private, low-pressure conversation. Requirements DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree California veterinary license, or eligibility to obtain one Strong communication skills Commitment to high-quality small animal medicine Interest in collaboration, clinical growth, and team-based patient care General practice and/or urgent care experience preferred, but fit matters more than years out of school Interest in dentistry, ultrasound, surgery, internal medicine, urgent care, integrative medicine, mentorship, leadership, or future ownership/partnership is welcomed Interest in practicing evidence-informed medicine while remaining open to appropriate integrative, complementary, and emerging diagnostic approaches
