Job Description

Join the Team at Martha's Vineyard — Bartender / Lead Bartender Martha's Vineyard is looking for experienced, outgoing bartenders to join our team — and for the right person, there may also be an opportunity to step into a Lead Bartender role. Whether you're a strong bartender who thrives behind a busy bar or someone who also enjoys helping lead a team, developing new drinks, and bringing fresh ideas to the table, we'd love to hear from you. We're looking for people who can make a great drink, handle a packed nightclub bar, and bring some personality to what we're doing at Martha's. And personality matters. A lot. You should enjoy talking to people, getting to know regulars, welcoming new patrons, and being part of the atmosphere of the club. We want bartenders who can provide great service while still feeling like part of the experience. For those interested in the Lead Bartender role, we're also looking for someone who genuinely enjoys bartending as a craft — experimenting with new drinks, playing with flavors, helping develop seasonal menus and specials, and coming up with ideas that make people want to order something besides their usual vodka soda. If you're the kind of bartender who might come up with a ridiculous drink special one week and somehow end up hosting an event from behind the bar the next, even better. About Martha's Martha's Vineyard has been part of downtown Springfield nightlife for more than 30 years. We're known for our drag and burlesque shows, large dance floor, special events, and creating a fun, welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors. Some nights are conversational and relaxed. Others are packed, loud, and moving nonstop. A great bartender at Martha's should be able to thrive in both — and maybe make either one a little more interesting. What You'll Be Doing All bartenders will: Bartend regular shifts and provide fast, friendly, accurate service Maintain drink quality and consistency Communicate problems, inventory needs, and opportunities to management Help make sure opening and closing duties are completed properly Maintain a positive, productive atmosphere behind the bar Work well with bartenders, barbacks, security, and management Contribute to a fun, welcoming experience for our patrons Help with special events, promotions, and new ideas when opportunities come up For Lead Bartender Candidates The Lead Bartender role includes additional responsibilities and creative freedom, including: Helping lead the bar team during assigned shifts Helping train bartenders and barbacks on recipes, procedures, and service standards Helping maintain consistency and service standards across the bar Developing new cocktails and drink specials Experimenting with ingredients, flavors, presentations, and new products Developing drinks around special events and themes Helping improve existing recipes and bar processes Identifying opportunities to make bar operations faster and more efficient Pitching ideas that make the bar more fun or memorable Occasionally participating in or even hosting events when it's a good fit Working closely with management on promotions, menus, events, and new ideas Not every idea will make the menu — and some experiments will probably be terrible. That's part of the fun. We want someone who thrives in change and loves to try new things. Responsible Service Matters Being great at selling drinks also means knowing when not to sell one. Martha's is not interested in pushing alcohol on someone who has clearly had enough. Every bartender on our team is expected to pay attention to patrons, recognize signs of intoxication, slow or stop service when appropriate, and communicate concerns to security or management. For a Lead Bartender, that also means helping set the standard for responsible service across the team. We want people to have a fantastic night at Martha's. We also want them to leave safely. What We're Looking For For all bartender candidates: Must be at least 21 years old Previous bartending experience in a busy bar environment Strong cocktail and drink knowledge Friendly, outgoing personality and comfortable engaging with patrons Strong communication and customer-service skills Able to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy or service Good judgment and strong responsible-service habits Comfortable telling a patron "no" when continuing service would be unsafe Able to stay calm and make decisions when things get busy Dependable, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently Strong organizational skills Willingness to learn, adapt, and try new things Open availability for Friday and Saturday nights Availability for weekday shifts and special events For Lead Bartender candidates, we'd also like to see: Significant bartending experience in a high-volume environment Some previous leadership, shift-lead, or management experience Genuine interest in creating and experimenting with new drinks Comfortable providing direction and feedback to other team members Creative thinker who isn't afraid to pitch new ideas Comfortable being a personality behind the bar rather than simply taking orders Schedule These are part-time positions . Open availability on most Friday and Saturday nights is important, with shifts generally falling between approximately 5:00 PM and 3:00 AM depending on the assignment and needs of the night. Some weekday shifts and special events will be required. Lead Bartender candidates may also have occasional menu-development time, meetings, training, or event-related responsibilities.
Compensation Bartender:
hourly wage + tips
Lead Bartender:
$12/hour + tips (we do not tip share, but there is a barback tip out on weekends) The Lead Bartender position carries a higher hourly rate because it includes additional ownership of the bar program, team leadership, drink and menu development, training, and creative responsibilities beyond a standard bartending shift. Perks Strong tip potential Employee discount Flexible scheduling Opportunities to participate in special events and promotions Creative freedom for Lead Bartender candidates Opportunity to help shape the future of Martha's bar program Fast-paced, social work environment Be part of a fun and diverse team If you're the kind of bartender who can handle a packed bar, remember the regulars, welcome the new faces, know when someone has had enough, and still have a good time doing it, we'd love to hear from you. And if you can also coach the person working next to you, dream up next month's cocktail menu, and somehow end up with a microphone in your hand during an event, we definitely want to hear from you. Martha's Vineyard is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for our patrons and our team.
