Duluth, MN Position Overview The Food Service Worker position supports all aspects of Marshall School's food service operation by assisting with food preparation, meal service, sanitation, dishwashing, inventory, concessions, catering, and general kitchen operations. This position is intentionally flexible, with daily responsibilities varying based on operational needs, staffing levels, meal schedules, athletic events, and special events. Successful candidates are dependable, team-oriented individuals who are willing to perform a variety of tasks to ensure the kitchen operates safely, efficiently, and professionally while providing exceptional service to the Marshall School community. 1. Food Preparation & Meal Service Assist with the preparation and portioning of food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, Community Time, Hilltop operations, concessions, catering, and special events. Prepare ingredients by washing, cutting, measuring, assembling, and packaging food items according to recipes and production schedules. Assist in serving meals and concessions while maintaining quality, presentation, and portion standards. Restock serving lines, concession areas, beverages, condiments, and supplies throughout service. Follow recipes, production sheets, and supervisor instructions to ensure consistency and food quality. 2. Kitchen Operations Perform a variety of kitchen duties as assigned based on daily operational needs. Rotate between food preparation, serving, concessions, catering, dishwashing, receiving deliveries, cleaning, stocking inventory, and other kitchen responsibilities. Assist with receiving deliveries, stocking inventory, and rotating products using First-In, First-Out (FIFO) inventory practices. Notify supervisors of inventory shortages, damaged products, equipment concerns, or maintenance needs. Assist with the setup, operation, service, and cleanup of concessions, athletic events, catering, school functions, and other special events. 3. Food Safety, Sanitation & Compliance Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, dining, serving, concession, and storage environment. Properly clean and sanitize food preparation areas, equipment, utensils, workstations, and dining areas. Operate commercial dishwashing equipment according to established procedures. Follow all food safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene standards. Properly store food and supplies while monitoring refrigerators, freezers, and hot holding equipment. Report safety hazards, damaged equipment, or maintenance concerns promptly. 4. Teamwork & Customer Service Work cooperatively with all members of the Food Service Department to accomplish daily production and service goals. Demonstrate flexibility by assisting in any area of the department where support is needed. Provide friendly, professional customer service to students, faculty, staff, parents, visitors, and event guests. Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented workplace culture. 5. General Responsibilities Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Follow all Marshall School policies, procedures, and workplace safety practices. Wear required uniforms and personal protective equipment. Assist with opening and closing duties as assigned. Be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, concessions, athletic events, catering functions, and other school events as needed. Perform other duties as assigned to support the daily operation of the Food Service Department.Required Qualifications & Skills Education:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.Experience:
Previous experience in food service, hospitality, commercial kitchens, catering, concessions, or customer service is preferred but not required. A willingness to learn and perform a variety of kitchen responsibilities is essential.Teamwork & Customer Service:
Ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining positive relationships with coworkers, students, faculty, staff, and guests. Demonstrates a positive attitude, reliability, and strong customer service skills.Technical Knowledge:
Basic knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and safe food handling practices. Ability to safely learn and operate commercial kitchen equipment. Food Handler or Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification is preferred but not required.Adaptability & Organization:
Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing daily assignments, work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and maintain attention to detail while following established procedures and supervisor direction.Personal Attributes:
Dependable, flexible, self-motivated, and willing to assist wherever needed. Strong communication skills, professional demeanor, and commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming kitchen environment.Employment Requirements:
Must successfully pass a federal criminal background check and any other pre-employment screenings required by Marshall School prior to employment. Physical Demands Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday. Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and perform repetitive motions. Ability to safely work around hot equipment, sharp utensils, wet floors, and refrigerated or freezer environments. Manual dexterity to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment.
