About Sunflower Bakery Sunflower Bakery is a nonprofit social enterprise that uses food as a pathway to employment for young adults with learning differences. Through skilled job training and employment opportunities in the baking and hospitality industries, Sunflower prepares individuals for meaningful careers and greater independence. Our programs include Pastry Arts, Hospitality Employment Training, and a pre-employment Teen Exposure Program. The Position Sunflower Bakery is seeking an experienced Pastry Chef / Instructor to join our Pastry Arts team. This is a unique, hands-on position that combines professional pastry production with vocational instruction. The Pastry Chef / Instructor works alongside our students in a busy production bakery, teaching professional baking techniques and workplace skills while also helping to produce high-quality products for our customers. We are looking for someone who is an experienced pastry professional and also enjoys teaching and mentoring others. The right candidate will be positive, patient, compassionate, flexible, highly organized, and comfortable balancing production deadlines with the individual needs of our students. Excellent piping and cake decorating skills are required for this position. What You'll Do Produce and decorate a variety of bakery and pastry products, including cakes, pies, bars, cookies, breads, and seasonal specialties. Train and mentor students with learning differences in the technical and workplace skills needed for employment in professional baking. Teach and demonstrate professional pastry techniques, including scaling, mixing, baking, piping, decorating, finishing, and portioning. Balance daily production responsibilities with hands-on student instruction and support. Oversee production to ensure quality, consistency, accuracy, and food safety. Follow established recipes and maintain accurate portion and production standards. Assist with menu planning, recipe development, and seasonal offerings. Work collaboratively with the Pastry Arts Director, bakery team, and Program staff to support student training and employment goals. Provide students with clear instruction, feedback, encouragement, and redirection as needed. Support production needs during high-volume and holiday periods. Maintain a clean, organized, and professional kitchen environment. Follow and reinforce food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures. What We're Looking For 5+ years of professional pastry or baking experience. Excellent professional piping and cake decorating skills are required. Strong professional baking and pastry production skills. High-volume bakery, commissary, or catering experience preferred. Culinary or Pastry Arts degree or certificate preferred. Experience teaching, training, supervising, or mentoring others preferred. Proficiency in bakery math, including scaling recipes and adjusting recipe yields. Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills. Ability to give clear instructions and work effectively with individuals with different learning styles and support needs. Patience, flexibility, and composure in a fast-paced production environment. Dependable and punctual attendance. ServSafe Manager Certification or ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire. Basic proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods. Commitment to Sunflower Bakery's mission. Schedule This is a full-time, hourly position averaging 30-40 hours per week. Hours are primarily during the daytime and may vary depending on production and training needs. Flexibility is required during busy holiday and high-production periods, which may occasionally include early mornings or evenings. Sunflower Bakery operates Sunday through Friday and is closed on Saturdays and most Jewish holidays.
