Assistant Cheesemaker and Cheese Monger

Job Description

Cato Corner Farm, a family-owned dairy farm named one of the "Top 50 Cheesemakers in the U.S." by Food and Wine , is seeking a personable and motivated individual to join our team. This is an opportunity to learn a bit about making and selling cheese while contributing to the success of our small farm.
Primary responsibilities include:
  • Assist with cheesemaking and clean up after cheesemaking.
  • Help sell cheese in our busy on-farm shop every Sunday until Christmas. Educate customers about our farm and our cheese. Represent our products and our philosophy to customers.
  • Help prepare orders for both wholesale and mail order customers.
  • Assist with implementation of our food safety plans.
Follow established protocols for food handling and cleaning. Help keep records of food safety procedures. This position is 3 days (24-26 hours) per week to start with the opportunity for additional hours later this fall.
Starting hours as follows:
  • Sunday, 7
  • 11 AM in the cheese plant. After a break, help sell cheese in the shop until 4:30 PM.
  • Monday, 9
  • 4 PM in the cheese plant.
  • Tuesday, 7
  • 4 PM in the cheese plant. Experience and Skills
  • Applicants should be enthusiastic, outgoing and intelligent with strong people skills.
  • You must be hard-working and eager to learn and you must work well with others.
  • Customer service is paramount; you must maintain professionalism and poise while working efficiently under pressure.
  • Experience with food handling is preferred.
  • Cheese making is a "glorified cleaning job." Be prepared to spend lots of time cleaning
  • it is critical to making a safe food product!
  • This is physical work
  • you must be in a fit condition with a strong back! You should be able to lift 40 pounds and spend all day on your feet in warm, humid conditions.
  • Knowledge of our cheese or of cheese making is not necessary, but you should enjoy cheese and be committed to local, sustainable food.
Wage dependent upon experience . We would also consider hiring two separate candidates, one to assist with cheese making and one to sell cheese in the shop.
