Yours is the first face our guests see at Surly, and it is in your hands to make their experience an amazing one. You help control the pace of the floor and seat guests as efficiently as possible while keeping organized and time wary. Our Hosts are friendly, outgoing, and possess phenomenal communication skills. They are the face of Surly for many of our guests. Surly is an all-hands-on deck operation. Our Hosts control the flow of the restaurant by being aware of everything. You have knowledge of exactly who is working where, where each reservation or group is, what the status of the kitchen is, and what is going on in every area of the building. Our Host position starts at $18/hour and is not a tipped position. The position will also earn Safe/Sick time per state requirements. This position requires Weekend Availability This position reports to the Front of the House Manager.
Basic requirements include:
High school diploma or GED required. One to three years hosting or serving experience preferred. Experience with Tock hosting software preferred. TIPS certification strongly preferred. If you do not have this, Surly will provide this training. Strong knowledge of beer styles, local and national craft beers, and Surly beers required. Able to efficiently explain our areas of service and differentials .An outgoing personality and exemplary customer service orientation required. Fantastic multitasker who can maintain friendly composure amid stress and high volume. A willingness to work as part of a team is essential. Able to perform physical work in a loud environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on the restaurant's needs, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Basic responsibilities include:
Welcome guests quickly. Be responsive and helpful. Inform guests of waits, seat guests quickly, efficiently, and politely while ensuring good flow and rotation to the Stewards on the floor. Be alert to any special needs guests may have (such as needing a highchair or booster, modifications to the table configuration, assistance getting to and from a table, making space for a wheelchair, etc.). Be comfortable with describing details of all of our beer, from what menu items would be complementary to the ABV to the hops and malts used, to the history of the beer and/or style. Able to talk about the history of Surly, the new building, our old location and the brewing process and the surrounding area with reasonable knowledge. Utilize Tock, our floor management program. Maintain a clean dining room floor and seating areas. Double check that flatware and glassware are immaculate (flatware should be clean and without spots; glassware should have beautiful lacing when serving beer). Check bathrooms every half hour to ensure trash is empty, soaps are full and general cleanliness is handled. Pay attention and adhere to TIPS principles. Should a guest (or employee) reach a state you do not feel they should drive, offer to call a taxi. Do not hesitate to ask for management intervention if necessary. Bring potentially systematic problems that require immediate action to the attention of the Front of House Manager. Any other responsibilities as assigned by the Front of House Manager.
