A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Job Description

To maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment ensuring the proper operation of the school facility and to assist staff in providing any facility needs. A Day in the Life Assigns cleaning and maintenance tasks to custodians as well as providing supervision and oversight to working schedules. Ensures responsibilities in opening the building are completed in order for students and staff to begin the school day. Assist administration in ensuring all facilities are ready for use during and outside school hours. Assists students and staff with any building needs, including cleaning up spills, opening lockers, locking/unlocking doors, moving furniture, etc. for the purpose of maintaining the efficiency of the building. Conducts daily cleaning and minor repairs to keep the building in operating condition. Checks and responds to Incident IQ requests for the purpose of meeting the needs of the building. Move necessary items for the purpose of being prepared for special activities and/or assisting building staff to set up their working environment. Conducts monthly inspections and prepares/files reports in order to meet district and mandated state guidelines. Inventories and orders supplies in order to have needed work materials. Establishes schedules and supervises summer cleaning crew to ensure summer maintenance tasks are completed. Maintains liaison with staff and custodians and communicates with supervisor in order to ensure energy use guidelines are being met. Monitors students during unsupervised times for the purpose of maintaining control and safety. Ensures the building is secured at the end of the school day including turning off lights and locking doors. Communicates with building administration regarding building needs/concerns to ensure buildings are appropriately maintained. Shovels, plows and salts sidewalks and steps during inclement weather to ensure a safe environment. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Maintain confidentiality as appropriate in order to comply with district, state and federal laws. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the department and district. Work with the Athletic Director to coordinate building and facility needs for athletic and extracurricular activities. Increased likelihood of coordinating staffing for evening and/or weekend events. Profile of a Successful Candidate Ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of standard cleaning chemicals is helpful. Has a high school diploma Is able to fulfill physical job duties of requiring 90% walking and 10% standing. Time is spent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.

Environment:
Primarily inside the building and occasional outside in all weather conditions. Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations. Must be regularly available and willing to work 40 hours per week, or such other hours as the district determines are necessary or desired.
