Job Description

Position Overview Temple Adath Yeshurun seeks a dependable, hands-on Building Caretaker/Custodian to help maintain our building and grounds and support worship services, religious school, programs, and special events. This role is responsible for keeping the Temple clean, safe, functional, and welcoming, while also handling routine maintenance, room setup, grounds upkeep, and event support. The position works closely with clergy, staff, volunteers, congregants, and outside contractors. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, is comfortable working independently, enjoys solving problems, and appreciates being part of a welcoming community environment. This position may be particularly well-suited for a semi-retired individual or someone seeking a flexible, non-traditional part-time schedule. Schedule & Availability This position requires regular Friday evening and Sunday availability, as well as occasional Saturdays. Please review the schedule carefully before applying. Every Friday, approximately 3:00-9:00 p.m. — required for Shabbat service preparation and support, as well as preparation of the building for Sunday religious school during the school year. Three Sundays per month during the school year , approximately 2 hours each, to reset school spaces. Approximately 6 hours per week over two weekdays, Monday-Thursday , scheduled flexibly based on the employee's and Temple's needs. Weekly Temple staff meeting , generally held during weekday hours and included as part of the regular weekly schedule. Occasional Saturdays for school setup or other Temple needs. Additional hours as needed for lifecycle events, special programs, holidays, and other Temple activities, including increased hours during the High Holy Day season (summer/early fall). Occasional availability for building emergencies or urgent needs. Regular Friday evening availability is an essential requirement of the position. Key Responsibilities Clean and maintain all areas of the Temple, including offices, classrooms, sanctuary, kitchen, bathrooms, and common spaces. Perform routine building maintenance and minor repairs, including basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and HVAC filter changes. Maintain the Temple grounds, including seasonal landscaping, snow and ice removal, and general exterior upkeep. Prepare and restore rooms for worship services, religious school, meetings, celebrations, rentals, and special events. Support weekly Shabbat services, holidays, High Holy Days, lifecycle events, and other Temple programs. Assist with kitchen cleanup and operation of the commercial dishwasher during events. Monitor the condition of the building and report maintenance, safety, or security concerns promptly. Coordinate with contractors and service providers as needed. Attend the weekly Temple staff meeting and communicate building-related needs and priorities. Work collaboratively with clergy, staff, volunteers, and congregants to support the life of the Temple. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications & Experience Experience in custodial, facilities maintenance, building operations, or a related field preferred. Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building maintenance. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently. Dependable, responsible, and comfortable taking initiative and solving problems. Friendly and comfortable interacting with people of all ages, including congregants, staff, children, volunteers, and vendors. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work indoors and outdoors year-round. Knowledge of safe food handling procedures and care of kitchen surfaces and equipment. Familiarity with Jewish customs and holidays—or enthusiasm and willingness to learn—is a plus. Successful completion of a background check is required. Hours & Compensation This hourly position averages approximately 15 hours per week , with the schedule driven by the Temple calendar and facility needs. The regular schedule includes a required Friday evening commitment (approximately 3:00-9:00 p.m.) , three Sunday afternoons per month during the school year, approximately six flexible weekday hours, and a weekly staff meeting. Occasional Saturday and additional event, holiday, and emergency hours are required based on Temple needs. Compensation is $20-$24 per hour, commensurate with experience .
