Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Job Description

The Substitute Custodian helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming school environment by performing general cleaning, maintenance, and facility care duties. Working under the direction of the Facilities Services Manager, this position supports daily building operations to ensure classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas are sanitary and ready for use by students, staff, and the community. This substitute position is on an as-needed basis and is not guaranteed day-to-day work. Key Responsibilities Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and other facilities. Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and polish floors and surfaces. Empty trash and recycling containers; clean and disinfect restrooms. Set up and break down rooms and equipment for school activities and events. Operate custodial and maintenance equipment such as buffers, vacuums, and carpet extractors. Assist with snow removal, lawn care, and outdoor maintenance as directed. Report maintenance or safety issues to the Facilities Services Manager. Follow all district safety policies and cleaning procedures. Demonstrate courteous and professional behavior when interacting with staff, students, and visitors. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Obtain and maintain required clearances and employment trainings. Prior custodial or maintenance experience preferred, especially in a school or institutional setting. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including bending, lifting, and climbing. Ability to operate and maintain custodial equipment safely and efficiently. Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and safety protocols. Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team. Substitute at least one day a school year to remain on the substitute employment list. Work Environment This position involves physical activity, including standing, walking, and lifting throughout the shift. Work may occur indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions. Personal protective equipment will be provided as needed.
