We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Assistant Kennel Manager to join our team at a dog boarding, daycare, and grooming facility in North San Diego. As an Assistant Kennel Manager, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the daily operations of our kennel during afternoons and evenings, while ensuring the well-being and safety of all animals in our care. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and has a genuine love for dogs and customer service. Those most likely to succeed in this position have a background in animal care settings such as dog daycare facilities, veterinary facilities. All applicants must have experience managing staff members and motivating a team to reach performance goals. The ideal candidate has would ensure that all customer communications are addressed, and company standards are being upheld within the kennel and front office. As a small business we require our managers to be flexible based on business needs including filling in scheduling gaps due to employee absences. They should be able to problem solve and utilize internal tools (manuals, handbooks, internal company chat) to do so. This position would be Tuesday through Saturday primarily working 12pm-7pm or 2pm-9pm shifts with occasional need for overnight work to manage and train direct reports from 9pm to 5am. The direct reports for the Assistant Kennel Manager (PM) will be overnight staff members assigned to 9pm-5am shift. Position Overview This is a team-oriented, metric-driven, and physically demanding role that requires excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to multitask and motivate staff to reach KPI's effectively. Responsibilities vary by shift and may include: Ability to perform all Kennel duties as needed: poop scooping, monitoring play yards, kennel sanitation, temperament tests, bathing, nail trims, medication administration, front desk reception, or scanning and filing. History of providing exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and building positive relationships with pet owners. Knowledge of dog boarding and daycare operations including safe handling practices of dogs. Ability to manage a team of direct reports with minimal guidance through 1:1's and coaching, including yearly reviews, documentation, and write ups. Experience scheduling and basic HR management. Ability to direct process improvements including SOP development and identifying areas for continued improvement Ability to work afternoons, evenings, and overnights (see description above) Able to maintain detailed customer records over cloud based software and CRM platforms Willing to work Tuesday through Saturday Availability to work holidays including: 4th of July, Memorial Day Weekend, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve Good to Have (Optional): Experience assisting with job postings, applicant screenings, interviews, and talent acquisition through Indeed. Knowledge of HR operations through Gusto. Experience with Goose CRM software. Networking and identifying partnership opportunities
Experience & Educational Requirements:
High school diploma minimum AA degree or bachelor's degree with commensurate experience preferred At least 1 year of managerial experience including direct report management. Must have experience with write-ups, ongoing one on one's, etc. (2 or more years preferred) At least 3 years experience in dog boarding, dog daycare, dog rescues, or veterinary hospitals.
