Job Overview:
Provides care for sheltered animals. Treats animals with kindness and respect and seeks to socialize them in order to make them more adoptable. Maintains a clean and sanitary environment for shelter animals. Provides exceptional customer support to all internal and external customers.
Job Duties:
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties/responsibilities that management deems necessary from time to time. Animal Care
- Clean and maintain kennels and animal living areas daily.
- Clean other shelter areas. Sweep, mop, take out garbage, wash windows, etc.
- Clean and maintain shelter equipment: i.e. carriers, leashes, brushes, etc.
- Provide each animal with food and water following approved feeding protocols.
- Help as needed with intake of new animals and inspection.
- Follow proper safety measures and procedures when handling animals and using chemicals and cleaning supplies.
- Clean and sanitize laundry and dishes in accordance with established protocol.
- Help maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Inform health technicians of any health concerns with the animals. Other Duties
- Act as a positive representative of HSSC to the general public.
- Other duties as assigned by the Animal Care Supervisor, Director of Operations, and Executive Director.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of one (1) year prior experience in a shelter or similar setting preferred, but not required
- A valid driver's license is required, and a clean driving record is strongly preferred, with the ability to demonstrate and maintain a safe driving record while employed
- Disease transmission prevention knowledge preferred
- Completion of Fear Free Shelters Program or ability to complete program within 1 month of employment
- Proficiency of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Able to humanely and safely handle animals under various circumstances
- Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to bend and squat regularly
- Ability to handle large animals (up to 150 lbs)
- Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes
- Strong interpersonal skills are necessary
- Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred
- Ability to maintain positive working relations with volunteers, staff, board members, donors, clients, and visitors
- Weekend and holiday availability required
