This is a hands-on position responsible for manufacturing the custom cushions, bolsters, upholstered panels, interior components and other soft-trim elements used throughout Outerlimits boats. While boat seats are outsourced to specialized suppliers, the majority of the other upholstered components are manufactured internally. As a result, this position plays an important role in the appearance, comfort, craftsmanship and perceived quality of the finished boat . The successful candidate must have excellent attention to detail and take pride in producing work where fit, finish, stitching, symmetry, seams, transitions, material alignment and overall aesthetics meet a high standard. Outerlimits is entering an important phase of growth, including relocation to a new manufacturing facility, investment in new tooling and the development of new models. The Upholstery Specialist will have the opportunity to contribute directly to improving current products as well as helping develop the upholstery and soft-trim components of future Outerlimits models. This is a full-time, on-site, non-supervisory position . The successful candidate will work closely with the Production and Product Development teams but will not have direct personnel-management responsibilities. Key ResponsibilitiesCustom Upholstery Manufacturing Manufacture custom cushions, bolsters, pads, panels and other upholstered components for Outerlimits boats. Build components according to drawings, templates, measurements, specifications and approved designs. Cut, shape, sew, assemble and finish upholstery materials as required. Work with marine-grade vinyl, fabrics, foam, backing materials and other upholstery materials. Produce components with consistent dimensions, shape, firmness and appearance. Ensure proper fit and alignment with the boat's interior and structural components. Build one-off and highly customized components when required by specific boat configurations or customer options. Craftsmanship & Attention to Detail Exceptional attention to detail is a fundamental requirement of this position. The Upholstery Specialist will be expected to pay close attention to: Stitching quality and consistency Seam alignment Stitch spacing Material orientation Grain and pattern alignment Corner construction Edge finishing Foam shaping Cushion thickness and symmetry Panel fit Transitions between adjacent components Hardware and attachment points Overall visual appearance Comfort and ergonomics The finished product should reflect the same level of craftsmanship expected from a premium, high-performance Outerlimits boat. Custom Parts, Panels & Components Manufacture upholstered side panels and interior trim. Build custom bolsters and seating surfaces. Manufacture removable cushions and pads. Produce upholstered components around consoles, cabins, cockpits and other areas of the boat. Create custom templates when required. Modify or adapt existing patterns for new models or customer-specific configurations. Work with composite, fiberglass, wood and other substrates when incorporating upholstery into finished components. Install snaps, fasteners, Velcro, zippers, backing materials and other upholstery hardware as appropriate. Pattern Development & Templates Develop and modify upholstery patterns and templates. Translate measurements, drawings and physical shapes into accurate upholstery components. Maintain accurate patterns for recurring production parts. Identify opportunities to improve templates for better fit and easier production. Support the development of patterns for new models and prototypes. Maintain organization and identification of patterns and templates to ensure repeatability. Product Quality Inspect components throughout the manufacturing process. Identify defects before components reach final assembly. Ensure finished components meet Outerlimits quality and aesthetic standards. Correct imperfections and dimensional inconsistencies. Identify recurring quality problems and recommend improvements. Ensure that finished components are properly protected and stored before installation. Work closely with production personnel to resolve fit or installation issues. Production Efficiency & Material Utilization The Upholstery Specialist will also be expected to contribute to continuous improvement in the manufacturing process.
Responsibilities include:
Identify opportunities to reduce material waste. Improve material cutting and utilization. Develop more efficient production methods. Reduce unnecessary rework. Improve repeatability of recurring components. Identify opportunities to standardize patterns and templates. Improve organization of upholstery materials and tools. Recommend alternative materials or construction techniques when they can improve quality, efficiency or durability. Share practical feedback with the Production Manager and Product Development team. Product Development Support The Upholstery Specialist will work with the Product Development team to help improve existing products and develop new Outerlimits models.
Responsibilities may include:
Provide practical input on the manufacturability of new upholstery designs. Participate in prototype development. Build prototype cushions, bolsters and panels. Identify opportunities to improve comfort, appearance and durability. Recommend alternative construction techniques. Help develop repeatable production methods for new components. Provide feedback on how designs can be improved for manufacturing efficiency. Identify potential problems before new designs enter production. Installation & Final Fit Install or assist with installation of internally manufactured upholstery components. Verify proper fit against fiberglass, composite and other boat structures. Make necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment and appearance. Ensure adjacent components transition cleanly and consistently. Inspect finished areas for visual quality before the boat progresses through production. Organization & Workplace Standards Maintain a clean, organized and safe upholstery work area. Properly store materials, tools, patterns and templates. Maintain clear identification of materials and work-in-process components. Prevent damage to finished upholstery components. Follow established production and safety procedures. Support the company's efforts to establish organized and efficient manufacturing practices. Knowledge of 5S, Lean Manufacturing or other continuous-improvement methodologies is a plus. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is a highly skilled upholstery professional who combines technical craftsmanship with an exceptional eye for detail .
The candidate should have:
5+ years of professional upholstery experience , preferably in marine, automotive, motorsports, aviation, RV or other high-end/custom manufacturing environments. Strong sewing and upholstery skills. Experience working with vinyl, marine fabrics, foam and other upholstery materials. Experience creating or modifying patterns and templates. Ability to work with irregular shapes and complex three-dimensional surfaces. Excellent attention to detail. Strong sense of aesthetics and proportion. Ability to consistently reproduce high-quality work. Ability to read drawings, measurements and templates. Strong understanding of material characteristics and construction techniques. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong problem-solving skills. Pride in craftsmanship and finished-product quality. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, custom manufacturing environment. Preferred Experience Experience in the following environments is particularly desirable: Marine / boat upholstery High-performance powerboats Custom yacht interiors Automotive upholstery Motorsports Aviation interiors Recreational vehicles Luxury furniture Custom fabrication High-end custom manufacturing Experience working with fiberglass, composites, wood and other boat-building materials is a plus. Experience with industrial sewing machines and upholstery-specific tools is strongly preferred. Education Formal education is not required if the candidate demonstrates strong professional experience and craftsmanship. Technical training in Upholstery, Marine Trades, Automotive Trim, Manufacturing or a related field is a plus.
