Job Description

Bishop Ranch Veterinary Center & Urgent Care is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our collaborative and compassionate hospital team. We are looking for dependable, motivated individuals who are passionate about animal care and enjoy working in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role is ideal for candidates who are confident handling patients, communicating with clients, and supporting outpatient and treatment workflow while continuing to grow their technical veterinary skills. Position Overview Veterinary Assistants in this role oversee technician appointments and work closely with doctors and RVTs to provide efficient, high-quality patient care and client service. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, time management, and the ability to adapt quickly in a busy hospital environment. Responsibilities Manage technician appointments and maintain efficient patient flow throughout the day Safely handle and restrain patients using low-stress handling techniques Communicate professionally and compassionately with pet owners Obtain patient histories and maintain accurate technician notes in medical records Perform outpatient procedures and treatments including: Vaccinations Nail trims Anal gland expressions Injections Subcutaneous and IV fluid administration Blood collection Cystocentesis Radiographs (x-rays) Bandage changes Suture removals Run and process laboratory samples according to hospital protocols Assist doctors and RVTs with treatments, diagnostics, and patient care as needed Monitor patient comfort and recognize changes in patient condition Prepare and review discharge instructions and home care information with clients Maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked treatment areas Support hospital workflow through teamwork, communication, and adaptability Assist with additional hospital tasks as needed Qualifications The following experience/education is required. 18+ years of age High School Diploma or its equivalent. Previous veterinary assistant experience strongly preferred Experience with animal restraint and outpatient procedures strongly preferred Ability to multitask and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment Strong communication and teamwork skills Comfortable working directly with clients and patients Ability to maintain accurate medical documentation Willingness to learn and continue developing technical skills Competencies Candidates will be evaluated for these job-role competencies: Ethics and Values, with demonstrated actions that consistently demonstrate those ethics and values. Additional Requirements The nature of the Veterinary Assistant role requires the following to complete work tasks: On-site presence. An ability to see, hear, and rapidly process what is occurring in the fast-paced work setting. Close vision is essential for completion of job duties. Ability to use hands and fingers to handle and feel. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, to reach with arms and hands, to climb, and to balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, and bend repeatedly. Ability to lift pets (25 lbs) and to team lift pets (55 lbs), to lift/stock heavy supplies, and to clean animal cages and restrain animals properly (to minimize risk of bites and scratches). Must wear protective clothing at times and take precautions when treating animals with germicides or insecticides. Strong communication skills in spoken English. Compensation, benefits, and schedule: Nights and weekends 8 hour shifts Full time $19-$23 Employee pet discount Sick pay accrual Dental Vision Medical 401(k) Vacation pay accrual Compensation is based on experience and technical skill level.
