Veterinary Assistant (Harris County) Make a Lasting Impact in Animal Care Openwork is proud to partner with Harris County to hire a compassionate and dedicated Veterinary Assistant for a high-volume shelter and clinic. WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS
As a Veterinary Assistant, you will serve on the front lines of shelter medicine. You will support examinations, treatments, and medical procedures that promote animal health and wellbeing, while helping maintain a safe, efficient, and organized clinical environment. You will also play an important role in educating pet owners and collaborating closely with veterinarians and team members to deliver exceptional care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide daily animal husbandry and compassionate care under medical supervision, following all safety protocols
  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked workspaces; sterilize surgical instruments
  • Accurately document treatments, diagnoses, and procedures in the shelter's software system
  • Administer medications and perform diagnostic tests as directed by veterinary staff
  • Assist with safe animal restraint, radiography, and preventive care procedures
  • Educate pet owners on responsible ownership and post-treatment care
  • Support health and safety standards in a busy, high-volume shelter environment
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in animal care, veterinary, or shelter settings
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and accurate data entry skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Team-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is a hands-on role in an active shelter setting with exposure to allergens, odors, noise, and varying temperatures. The position requires frequent standing, bending, lifting, and stooping, as well as safely restraining animals and lifting up to 50 pounds.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
    Pay:
    $16.50 per hour, paid weekly
      Schedule:
      40 hours per week with rotating weekend shifts
