An Animal Control Officer works for a police department or public safety agency and responds to calls for help with abandoned or mistreated animals. Assists with capturing wild animals found in city neighborhoods or populated areas.
To perform a variety of duties involved in enforcing City Ordinances and state laws governing the care and upkeep of animals in the City; and to impound, care for and dispose of animals as appropriate.
SUPERVISION
General supervision is provided by the Animal Control Director and/or Assistant Director or his/her designee.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Adhere and comply with the City of Mt. Juliet Personnel/Police Policy and Procedure Manual. Plan routine patrols to search for loose animals; prioritize calls using Animal Control division guidelines; respond to calls and complaints regarding dead, loose and/or vicious animals. Patrol city streets and roads in search for stray cats, dogs and other domestic animals. Enforcement of applicable laws (federal and state) and local codes, and ordinances; protection of animals and citizens. Enforce City animal control laws; explain ordinances relating to the care and keep of animals; issue citations for violations of animal control ordinances; appear in court on applicable cases. Impound, quarantine, and dispose of animals as appropriate; transport injured animals to a veterinarian to be treated. Euthanize sick, injured or homeless animals as necessary. Cremates animals as needed. Assist in conducting education programs including making presentation at schools, educating citizens in the neighborhoods and responding to questions on the telephone. Assist with the care and maintenance of the shelter and the animals including cleaning the shelter, feeding the animals and preparing the animals for euthanasia. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports. Works closely with the work of the Volunteer Coordinator and/or volunteers, to ensure compliance to all rules.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate with the police department or other legal officials as needed; sign affidavits as appropriate. Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION
High School Diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
With 2-4 months of Animal Control/handling experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid Tennessee driver's license. Must obtain a certification as a Basic Animal Control officer through the National Animal Control Association within one year of employment. Euthanasia Certification may be required. Must obtain incinerator certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF
Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals. Basic methods of animal collection and impoundment. Principles and practices of record keeping and recording. Pertinent federal, state, local laws, codes and ordinances related to the care and control of animals. Proper authorized euthanasia and cremation techniques.
SKILL IN
