This role performs difficult professional, administrative, and technical protective service work, directing the daily activities of career and volunteer Firefighters/EMTs. The Assistant Fire Chief works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief to ensure operational readiness, maintain facilities and apparatus, and provide technical expertise during complex emergency operations.

Key Responsibilities Personnel & Operations:

Supervise and evaluate full-time, part-time, and volunteer staff; direct daily work assignments; and manage the readiness of apparatus, equipment, and facilities.

Training & Professional Development:

Plan, organize, deliver, and maintain records for comprehensive training programs covering fire suppression, technical rescue, EMS, hazardous materials, health and safety, fire inspection/investigation, community risk reduction, and physical fitness.

Administrative Leadership:

Develop and administer task books and serve as the N.C. Fire and Rescue Commission Delivery Agency School Director.

Emergency Response:

Assist with technical expertise and equipment operation during high-hazard emergency incidents involving fire, rescue, and EMS. Working Conditions & Physical Demands Due to the inherently dangerous nature of emergency services, employees in this class are subject to: Working in inside and outside environments in extreme hot and cold weather. Exposure to loud noises, vibrations, fire, smoke, odors, mists, oils, chemicals, and bodily fluids. Compliance with OSHA standards regarding bloodborne pathogens.
