OF POSITION
This is an entry level position responsible for enforcing local, state and federal laws in an effort to protect life and property. This is general police work which involves crime prevention, investigation and detection, traffic control and maintaining law and order within the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Patrols an assigned area to prevent and/or detect violations of local, state and federal laws. Responds to emergency calls and provides assistance as needed. Responds as backup on crimes in progress and helps secure the safety of officers in danger. Arrests individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activity according to established polices and procedures; provides information to persons involved in arrests including advising them of their rights, duties and privileges. Conducts interviews to learn the nature of citizens complaints, to gain information related to emergency or criminal situations or offenses. Performs interrogations to determine probable cause, identify suspects and to obtain information necessary to make an arrest. Investigates criminal activity, isolates and secures crime scenes, gathers and safeguards evidence, according to established procedures. Participates in law enforcement activities with other City departments and provides mutual assistance during emergency situations when necessary. Enforces traffic and parking regulations which includes but is not limited to, traffic stops, inspecting license and vehicle registrations, identifying vehicle code violations, operating radar and determining the drivers ability to operate their vehicle. Administers roadside sobriety tests, arrests intoxicated drivers and completes chemical analysis requests in driving under the influence cases.

(continued) Determines probable cause to arrest or search; prepares affidavits and serves authorized warrants. Establishes police lines at fire and crime scenes, institutes vehicular and crowd control procedures; directs and controls traffic and participates in the dispersal of unruly gatherings. Obtains evidence and assists in preparing cases for filing charges; appears in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of crimes. Completes detailed and accurate reports and other official records that document an officer's activity or involvement in all incidents. Interacts with schools, community groups, participates in departmental community relations programs, Drug Awareness Resistance Education and helps citizens form neighborhood watch groups. Provides assistance to persons who may be lost, stranded or otherwise in need of assistance. Operates and maintains assigned departmental vehicles and equipment according to established procedures.

Ability to learn and, upon accumulating experience, possess the knowledge and ability to apply the principles and techniques used in law enforcement. Ability to learn and, upon accumulating experience, possess the knowledge and ability to apply applicable laws and ordinances, department rules and regulations, and the municipal police organizational procedures. Ability to learn and, upon accumulating experience, possess the knowledge and ability to apply first aid principles and the techniques of administering emergency medical aid. Ability to learn and, upon accumulating experience, possess the knowledge of the geography for the City of Ralston. Ability to utilize sound independent judgement in stressful and emergency situations, analyze situations quickly and objectively and to adapt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, law enforcement agencies, governmental officials, supervisors and fellow employees. Ability to complete standardized report forms and prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive recommendations and descriptive narratives. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all departmental communications, documents and correspondence. Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in English. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, utilize correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to type accurately using a typewriter, word processor and/or personal computer.
1. Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the high school GED test. 2. Must be 21 years of age and must possess a valid drivers license at the time of hire. 3. Must be a United States citizen at the time of hire. 4. Must obtain certification as required by the Nebraska State Law Enforcement Academy within time frame established by employer. 5. Must have standard visual acuity of not less than 20/200 in both eyes which may be correctable to 20/20. Must display adequate color, peripheral vision and depth perception in both eyes.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Police officers are often placed in a position of physical and mental stress and will be required to perform a variety of duties which may require the incumbent to walk, run long distances or sit for short or extended periods of time. The incumbent may be required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, smell, hear, talk. The incumbent is required to use their hands to finger, handle, operate or feel objects, tools, equipment or controls and reach with hands and arms. Hand eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment

(continued) and vehicles. The incumbent must also be able to lift and/or move objects up to 85 pounds, without assistance. The incumbent is required to work in all climatic conditions, extreme heat to cold with snow and ice. The incumbent may occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places and may be required to work with explosives. The incumbent may be exposed to body fluids, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work will be required in times of darkness, as well as normal daytime activities. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate, yet may occasionally be intense.
