This is a broad and important position in a small office. The person in this role will serve as our primary paralegal and legal assistant, assist with case management and legal drafting, communicate with clients and courts, answer incoming calls, and help keep the office organized and running efficiently. We are looking for someone with substantial practical law-office experience, excellent judgment, initiative, strong organizational skills, and a willingness to learn and use modern technology — including artificial intelligence — to produce higher-quality work more efficiently. Responsibilities Assist attorneys with civil litigation matters from intake through resolution Draft and proofread correspondence, pleadings, discovery, notices, subpoenas, proposed orders, summaries, and other legal documents Organize and maintain case files, discovery, exhibits, medical records, employment records, damages documentation, and other evidence Calendar and monitor deadlines, hearings, depositions, mediations, and other case events Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court personnel, experts, medical providers, witnesses, and vendors Answer incoming telephone calls and assist prospective and existing clients Assist with factual and legal research under attorney supervision Support attorneys with discovery, deposition preparation, hearings, mediations, and trial preparation Prepare chronologies, deposition summaries, exhibit materials, document summaries, and other litigation support Review incoming pleadings, correspondence, orders, and other documents and identify matters requiring attorney attention File documents electronically and otherwise assist with compliance with court procedures and filing requirements Provide administrative support including scheduling, calendar management, correspondence, and general office organization Use firm-approved AI tools to assist with drafting, proofreading, summarizing, organizing, research support, and improving legal work product Perform other reasonable administrative and case-related duties as needed in a small law firm AI and Technology We are actively incorporating artificial intelligence into our law practice and consider it an important professional tool. The successful candidate does not need to be an AI expert on day one, but must be willing and enthusiastic about learning to use AI effectively and responsibly. We expect our paralegal to use AI as a drafting and productivity assistant while independently reviewing the work, verifying facts and legal authorities, protecting client confidentiality, and applying sound judgment.
