Duties Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vans in accordance with state and local laws. Transport passengers—including students, seniors, and individuals with disabilities—while ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the journey. Assist passengers with wheelchair boarding and provide wheelchair assistance as needed. Follow all traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures for transportation. Conduct pre-trip inspections and routine vehicle checks to maintain mechanical integrity and safety standards. Respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies by implementing emergency stop procedures or defensive driving techniques. Communicate effectively with passengers using clear language; manage behavior and enforce passenger discipline when necessary. Maintain accurate logs of trips, incidents, and vehicle inspections; complete shift reports diligently. Provide exceptional customer service by addressing passenger questions or concerns professionally and courteously. Support safety protocols by participating in first aid or CPR training; respond appropriately to medical emergencies onboard. Skills Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation, or transit vehicle operation with a valid CDL license. Strong knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and emergency response procedures for transportation. Excellent communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for serving diverse communities. Demonstrated ability in defensive driving techniques; quick response to traffic changes essential for passenger safety. Experience working with children or seniors; understanding of child care or senior care practices is advantageous. Mechanical knowledge for basic vehicle troubleshooting and routine inspections. Ability to lift heavy objects safely when assisting passengers or handling equipment; physical stamina required for long shifts. Familiarity with school policies related to student discipline and behavior management. Multilingual skills to better serve diverse populations; strong writing skills for documentation purposes.
