Position Title Security Officer (2 openings) Required Application Type School Related Personnel Salary/Pay Scale $32.35/hour Job Description The Rome City School District is seeking two dedicated School Security Officers to help provide a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for our students, staff, and visitors. This position plays a vital role in maintaining school safety, building positive relationships with students, and supporting school administrators in promoting a secure educational environment.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
These duties involve responsibility for ensuring the safety of students and staff, maintaining order and protecting city school property during an assigned shift. Additionally, School Security Officers are responsible for enforcement of the fire prevention and other school building safety regulations. Incumbent prevent illegal or forceful entry and damage to school district property reporting violations and imminent danger to the proper authorities. The work is performed under the supervision of the Building Principal and the Director of Security with leeway permitted for exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision of School Security Aides is a responsibility of employees in this class.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises the daily security and safety needs of students and staff at the high school and junior high schools and at school related activities, (i.e., interscholastic athletic events and dances); Reports all violations of law and school district policies to the building administration; Advises school administration of any situation which may create a potential of harm to individuals or damage to or loss of property; Implements and enforces new programs addressing the safety and security needs of a school; Prepares reports in matters relating to security and safety; Looks for and recognizes potential problems (interpersonal) and resolve issues before the problem becomes an incident; Works closely with building administration, faculty and staff in performance or above duties; Provides appropriate documentation of incidents when necessary and possible; Performs other duties and tasks as may be assigned by Building Administrator and Director of Security; Acts as liaison between the school district and community public safety officials.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of the practices and procedures necessary to maintain order and ensure the protection of life and security of buildings, grounds and equipment; Working knowledge of safety precautions necessary to eliminate or prevent fires, accidents and safety hazards; Ability to exercise sound judgment in carrying out monitoring and security duties; Ability to relate to today's youth and social problems; Ability to maintain perspective; Must have strong conflict resolution skills; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; Ability to remain calm in stressful situations; Ability to prepare clear and concise reports; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of full time experience as a security guard, corrections officer, juvenile officer, police officer, deputy sheriff or related field which shall have included training in crowd control.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Prior to employment, the incumbent must possess a NYS Security Certification and must have completed a child abuse recognition course. Effective July 1, 2002, a fingerprint supported criminal history background check is mandatory for prospective employees of the school district, charter schools and BOCES.
