Job Description

Lead Aquatic Invasive Species Technician Keuka Lake Association Penn Yan, New York Job Type Temporary Salary $20 per hour Min. Experience 0 - 1 year Under the supervision of Keuka Lake Association (KLA) and Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) at Hobart and William Smith College, KLA Lead Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Technician will coordinate field team activities to survey the aquatic plant community of Keuka Lake. Using established survey methods, the field team will identify native and invasive macrophytes, and map the location and extent of invasive fanwort populations. Gain valuable leadership experience, develop important field sampling skills, enjoy the outdoors, and contribute to conservation efforts on Keuka Lake.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead a three-person field team, including two KLA AIS Technicians
  • Perform aquatic macrophyte surveys in Keuka Lake
  • Use kayaks to safely navigate the Keuka Lake shoreline while completing field work
  • Collect and submit accurate field data following established protocols
  • Collect voucher specimens of native and invasive macrophytes
  • Conduct field work as a team under the supervision of a Lead Technician
  • Attend training led by the Finger Lakes Institute with support of the Finger Lakes
PRISM ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is a seasonal, non-benefits eligible, summer position with the Keuka Lake Association in Penn Yan, NY. Start date is anticipated for late May. Access to reliable transportation to and from Penn Yan is required. Training will be held in Geneva, NY. This position description is not all inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned, such as participation in projectrelated community outreach. The position is 12 weeks. Weekly hours are 40 hrs/week and pay rate is $20/hr.

Since 1956, the Keuka Lake Association (KLA) has been at the forefront of advocating for the preservation and protection of Keuka Lake and its watershed. KLA works closely with local and regional partners in areas including water quality, invasive species, lake level management, and much more. Through the dedicated work of its volunteers and strength of community partnerships, KLA is proud to preserve and protect Keuka Lake and the watershed for current and future generations.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in a leadership role required
  • Knowledge of aquatic invasive species and lake ecosystems
  • Experience with plant identification preferred
  • Experience in or ability to perform environmental field work
  • Experience or comfort in operating various types of equipment including hand-powered watercraft (kayak), tablets, GPS units (NYS Boating Safety Certificate a plus)
  • Experience or ability to work in a wide range of safe weather conditions
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds
