Job Description
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is hiring a skilled Fleet Mechanic to maintain and repair a wide variety of vehicles and equipment used in daily law enforcement operations. This position plays a key role in keeping our patrol and support vehicles safe, reliable, and service-ready. Responsibilities Perform routine preventive maintenance on patrol vehicles, transport vans, motorcycles, and marine equipment. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems. Conduct safety inspections to meet department and regulatory standards. Install and maintain law-enforcement-specific equipment (light bars, radios, cages, computer mounts, etc.). Maintain accurate service records and inventory using fleet software. Respond to urgent repair needs to reduce downtime. Coordinate with vendors for specialized repairs. Follow all safety protocols and department policies. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. ASE/EVT certifications preferred (or equivalent experience). Valid driver's license; CDL a plus. Experience with diesel and gasoline engines, diagnostics, and modern automotive technology. Minimum four years as an automotive technician; fleet experience preferred. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently. Must pass a background investigation. Compensation & Benefits Starting pay: $39.04/hour; top pay: $49.54/hour (per union contract). Overtime paid after 40 hours. Paid holidays and three personal days. Uniforms provided. IMRF pension (employee and employer contributions).
