Mechanic is a safety-sensitive position regulated under the Department of Transportation. This role is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on a wide range of City vehicles and equipment—including police, fire, transit, and CDL-regulated vehicles—to ensure safe, efficient, and dependable services for the Owensboro community. Starting hourly pay is $27.8307. Paid time off includes vacation, sick time, and holidays (for eligible employees).The Public Works Mechanic performs preventive maintenance and repairs on City vehicles and equipment, conducts diagnostics and troubleshooting, and completes component installations and scheduled maintenance. The role also involves maintaining accurate records such as labor logs, parts usage, and warranty documentation, along with operating shop tools and diagnostic equipment. Additionally, the mechanic assists with vehicle specifications and purchasing recommendations, ensures shop safety, and responds to emergency service calls as needed.

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, along with a minimum of two years of diesel mechanic experience or four years of experience in a public works department. A valid driver's license is required, and while a CDL is preferred, employees must obtain a Kentucky Class B CDL within 11 months of employment. Supervisory experience is also preferred.
