The City Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and servicing of City-owned vehicles, equipment, machinery, and related mechanical systems. The position performs preventive maintenance and repairs to help ensure that City vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, operational, and properly maintained. The Mechanic works with various City departments to identify mechanical problems and coordinate the repair and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment. The employee is expected to maintain accurate maintenance records, follow established safety procedures, use City equipment responsibly, and promptly report significant mechanical or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance Inspect, service, maintain, and repair City-owned automobiles, trucks, vans, lawn equipment, tractors, trailers, and other mechanical equipment. Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer recommendations and City maintenance schedules. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other equipment problems. Perform routine oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, belt replacement, and other preventive maintenance. Inspect brakes, tires, batteries, steering systems, suspension systems, cooling systems, and other vehicle components. Repair or replace defective mechanical components and parts. Perform minor electrical repairs and troubleshooting. Maintain and repair small engines and grounds-maintenance equipment. Inspect City vehicles and equipment for unsafe or defective conditions. Recommend when vehicles or equipment require major repairs, specialized service, or replacement. Conduct road tests or operational tests following repairs when appropriate and authorized. Ensure that vehicles and equipment are returned to service in a safe and operational condition. Fleet Maintenance Maintain an organized preventive-maintenance schedule for City vehicles and equipment. Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts, labor, mileage, service dates, and maintenance performed. Monitor vehicle and equipment conditions and report recurring problems to the supervisor. Maintain an inventory of commonly used parts, supplies, tools, lubricants, and other maintenance materials. Submit requests for parts, supplies, and outside repairs through established City procedures. Coordinate with outside vendors when specialized repairs or services are required. Verify that completed outside repairs correspond with authorized work. Keep maintenance areas, tools, and equipment clean and organized. Safety and Compliance Follow all applicable City policies, safety procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable federal and state requirements. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when performing maintenance or repairs. Properly handle, store, and dispose of oils, fuels, chemicals, batteries, and other hazardous materials. Follow proper procedures when working under vehicles, using lifts, operating power tools, or performing repairs involving hazardous equipment. Immediately report unsafe vehicles, equipment, work conditions, accidents, injuries, or hazardous conditions to the appropriate supervisor. Do not place a vehicle or piece of equipment back into service when a known safety-related defect has not been corrected or otherwise authorized by the appropriate supervisor. Maintain current knowledge of safe mechanical practices and equipment operation. Administrative Responsibilities Complete maintenance documentation accurately and timely. Maintain records required for City fleet management and accountability. Communicate vehicle and equipment repair needs to department supervisors. Provide recommendations regarding major repairs, replacement parts, and equipment condition. Assist with maintaining an accurate inventory of City vehicles and equipment. Follow City purchasing, work-order, timekeeping, and reporting procedures. Maintain confidentiality of City information when required. Cooperate with other City departments when performing authorized maintenance or repair work. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor or authorized City official.

Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation. Ability to respond appropriately to emergency or unexpected mechanical problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education High school diploma or GED preferred. Experience Two (2) years of experience in automotive, diesel, fleet, heavy equipment, small-engine, or related mechanical maintenance is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties of the position may be considered. License/Certification Valid Louisiana driver's license required.
