Our technicians work on a wide variety of emergency vehicles, including large custom fire apparatus, pumpers, aerials, tankers, commercial-chassis fire trucks, wildland and brush trucks, and ambulances. This is a hands-on mobile field service position. Our technicians travel directly to fire departments and EMS agencies to perform preventative maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs, helping keep critical emergency vehicles safe, reliable, and ready to respond. Heavy-duty diesel experience is a must. Previous fire apparatus or EVT experience is preferred, but it is not required for the right technician. If you are an experienced heavy-duty diesel technician with strong mechanical and diagnostic abilities, we can provide industry-specific training and help you obtain your Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications. Pay is based on knowledge, experience, certifications, and demonstrated skill level. Responsibilities Travel to fire departments and EMS agencies to perform mobile maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs. Service and repair all makes and models of fire apparatus and ambulances, regardless of manufacturer. Work on a wide variety of emergency vehicles including pumpers, aerial apparatus, tankers, brush trucks, wildland apparatus, rescue vehicles, and ambulances. Diagnose and repair heavy-duty diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, air brake systems, steering, suspension, cooling systems, HVAC systems, and other chassis components. Diagnose and repair electrical systems, charging and starting systems, lighting, multiplex systems, and other vehicle electrical components. Perform preventative maintenance services and comprehensive inspections to identify mechanical problems, safety concerns, and potential failures before they result in downtime. Diagnose and repair specialized fire apparatus systems including fire pumps, plumbing, valves, foam systems, generators, scene lighting, and other emergency equipment. Diagnose and repair ambulance chassis and vehicle systems as applicable. Utilize diagnostic software, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, and manufacturer technical information to troubleshoot complex problems. Complete accurate service reports documenting inspections, diagnostics, repairs, parts used, and recommended repairs. Maintain assigned service truck, equipment, and inventory. Communicate professionally with fire chiefs, fleet managers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other customer representatives. Follow company and industry safety procedures while working around large emergency vehicles and equipment. Travel throughout the assigned service area with occasional overnight travel as required. Qualifications & Experience Heavy-duty diesel or heavy-truck repair experience is required. Strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, air brakes, steering, suspension, cooling systems, and related heavy-duty vehicle systems. Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities. Experience diagnosing automotive or heavy-duty electrical systems. Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical service information. Experience with Cummins diesel engines and Allison transmissions is a plus. Fire apparatus, ambulance, or emergency vehicle repair experience is strongly preferred but not required. Current Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications are preferred but not required. Simpson Fire Fleet Solutions can assist qualified technicians with obtaining their EVT certifications. ASE certifications are a plus. Experience with welding, fabrication, hydraulics, fire pumps, multiplex electrical systems, or apparatus electrical systems is a plus. Must be comfortable working independently in the field and making sound diagnostic and repair decisions. Strong communication and customer-service skills. Must be capable of performing the physical requirements of heavy-duty vehicle repair, including lifting, climbing, kneeling, working underneath vehicles, and working outdoors. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required. Must be at least 21 years old and able to travel as required.
