MECHANIC JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary The Mechanic inspects, diagnoses, repairs, services, and maintains Bear Contracting's construction equipment, trucks, trailers, tools, and support equipment to keep company assets safe, reliable, and available for field operations. The Mechanic works under the direction of the Shop Manager and accurately documents labor, repairs, parts, and equipment conditions in the company work-order system. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Equipment Repair & Troubleshooting

• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and engine-related failures.
• Repair heavy construction equipment, trucks, trailers, pickups, and support equipment.
• Perform shop and field repairs, including urgent repairs needed to restore production.
• Test completed repairs and verify equipment is safe and operational before returning it to service. Preventative Maintenance
• Perform scheduled services, including oil and filter changes, fluid inspections, lubrication, and preventative inspections.
• Complete maintenance at required service intervals.
• Identify worn or damaged components and report additional repair needs to the Shop Manager. Work Orders & Documentation
• Complete assigned work orders accurately and promptly.
• Enter labor hours, repair notes, parts used, equipment downtime causes, and corrective actions.
• Create a work order when performing an unassigned field repair.
• Maintain required receipts and supporting documentation for parts or materials obtained during a repair. Equipment Inspections
• Inspect equipment before and after repairs.
• Identify and report safety defects and major repair needs.
• Assist with annual inspections and seasonal maintenance work.
• Perform regular Fleet Vehicle Inspections and State certifications. Shop & Tool Care
• Maintain clean and organized work areas.
• Properly use, store, and care for company tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Notify the Shop Manager of low stock or needed repair supplies.
• Participate in shop cleanup and facility upkeep. Safety & Compliance
• Follow company safety policies, required PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and equipment-specific safety requirements.
• Perform work in accordance with applicable company, manufacturer, OSHA, and DOT requirements.
• Report incidents, hazards, and unsafe equipment immediately. Qualifications Required
• Experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, or construction equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical problems.
• Ability to read service manuals and repair procedures.
• Ability to work independently and follow assigned priorities.
• Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
• Valid driver's license. Preferred
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Welding and fabrication experience.
• Experience with construction equipment and vocational truck manufacturers.
• Experience with E360 or comparable maintenance tracking software.
• DOT inspection knowledge.
• Heavy civil, highway, utility, or asphalt construction experience.
