Job Description

Lead Hydraulic and Marine Equipment Mechanic Desperate Marine LLC | Homer, Alaska Full-time | $37.14-$51.00 per hour, depending on experience Lead the hydraulic and mechanical work that keeps working vessels and marine equipment in service. As our lead mechanic, you'll take challenging jobs from the first customer conversation through diagnosis, estimating, repair, testing, and delivery. You'll have substantial freedom to run the mechanical bay, make sound technical decisions, and organize the work that comes through the shop. Desperate Marine is based in Homer and serves commercial fishing vessels, fuel barges, research vessels, and other marine customers across Alaska. Our customers operate from Kodiak and Dutch Harbor to Nome, Valdez, and Cordova. We regularly ship parts and completed work to customers beyond Homer, while local jobs take us into boatyards and aboard vessels. The work ranges from failed deck equipment to hydraulic systems that require careful testing and experienced troubleshooting. You'll disassemble unfamiliar equipment, trace faults, determine the right repair, and verify that the finished job performs as it should. We're also looking to grow our work with oil and gas customers. This is a hands-on leadership role for a mechanic who wants responsibility while staying close to the tools. You'll work alongside other employees, guide technicians when needed, communicate directly with customers, and help return critical equipment to service. What you'll do Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems and mechanical equipment in the shop, aboard vessels, and at local boatyards. Disassemble unfamiliar equipment, identify the cause of a failure, repair or replace what is needed, and test the completed work. Work on equipment such as winches, pumps, motors, valves, cylinders, and related vessel machinery. Read hydraulic schematics, trace circuits, and use pressure and flow testing to find faults. Prepare estimates for your jobs, schedule your work, coordinate parts, and keep customers informed. Manage the flow of work through the mechanical bay, balancing incoming jobs with work already in progress. Guide others working with you and help maintain safe, careful workmanship. What you'll bring Strong hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic and mechanical equipment. The ability to work through complex problems and complete repairs without step-by-step supervision. Sound mechanical judgment, including knowing when to repair a component and when to recommend replacement. Experience planning jobs, communicating with customers, and keeping work moving. The confidence to take responsibility for a shop area while still doing the mechanical work yourself. Commercial marine experience is valuable, but we'll also consider a strong mechanic from heavy equipment or industrial service who can apply those skills to vessels and marine equipment. Experience with machining, welding, hydraulic hose fabrication, or stainless tubing is a plus. Pay and benefits $37.14-$51.00 per hour, depending on experience Two weeks of paid time off Company contribution toward insurance premiums; employees pay the remaining portion Employee discount Discounted gym membership Flexible scheduling Relocation assistance may be considered for a qualified candidate About Desperate Marine and Homer We're a growing, hands-on shop where people solve problems together and take pride in getting working equipment back into service. We welcome applicants from outside Alaska who are interested in relocating.
